BLM is seeking individuals to join the team to serve as a Supervisory Wildland Firefighters (Engine Captains) with the Bureau of Land Management, Eastern Montana/Dakotas District, Division of Fire Management.

The incumbent is the Engine Captain responsible for performing a variety of duties including, but not limited to the following:
Directing the operation of a wildland fire engine, ensuring proper use and operation.
Performing personally and directing others in starting pump engine, priming pump, adjusting engine speed and pump valves, laying hose, and using appropriate nozzles and nozzle adjustment in effective use of water and additives.
Being responsible for maintenance of equipment used to respond to wildland urban interface/intermix situations.
Ensuring the engine is kept in a full state of readiness for emergency fire dispatch.
Providing technical and administrative supervision to wildland fire engine crews.
Implementing formal and informal training programs to comply with policy and regulations.
Participating in wildland fire and safety training in the techniques, practices, and methods of fire suppression and in the safe, efficient operation and use of tools, equipment, and vehicles used in fire suppression activities, with emphasis on those used for the particular function assigned.
Physical Demands and Work Environment: Duties involve rigorous field work requiring above average physical performance, endurance and superior condition. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds. The work is primarily performed in forest and range environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with thick tangled vegetation, smoky conditions, etc. Temperatures commonly exceed 100 degrees F and fall below freezing. Risks include smoke inhalation, fire entrapment, snake or insect bites/stings, exposure to excessive machinery noise, and falling and rolling material. Incumbent may be required to live in backcountry camps for extended periods of time. The hazardous nature of the work requires that personal protective equipment be worn (boots, hardhat, gloves, flame resistant clothing, etc.).
Appointment is subject to meeting one-year probationary requirements.
Supervisory Probationary Period: If you are selected for this position, you will be required to serve a one year supervisory probationary period, if one has not previously been completed.
This is a LONG-TERM CAREER SEASONAL position (6 to 11 1/2 months). It is expected that the incumbent will work at least 6 months per year, but not more than 11 1/2 months. When work or funds are not available you will be placed in non-pay status.
Miles City Duty Station - May be require the ability to obtain a CDL with in 90 days.
This position requires regular and recurring overtime and shift work.
This position requires you to wear an officially-approved uniform while in a duty status.
This is a primary fire position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS). The maximum entry-age for this position shall not exceed age 37, unless you have sufficient prior Federal civilian firefighter experience or you are a preference eligible veteran. If you are a preference eligible veteran, you may be eligible for this position after your 37th birthday. You must supply a copy of your Defense Department Form 214 (DD-214) along with Standard Form 15 (if applicable) and any associated documentation in accordance with the instructions in this vacancy announcement. Failure to provide this documentation with your application will result in loss of eligibility to receive a waiver of the maximum entry age requirement.
THIS IS A DRUG TESTING DESIGNATED POSITION. In accordance with Executive Order 12564, and under the Department’s Drug Free Workplace Program. For GS-07: One year of specialized wildland fire experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in the Federal service. Examples include on-the-line wildland fire experience in forest/range fire control, prevention or suppression work as a skilled lead wildland firefighter, utilizing a wide variety specialized wildland fire tools and equipment, at this level employee has a general discussion of what is to be done with a higher graded employee - OR - One year (18 semester hours) of graduate level education DIRECTLY related to the work of the position.
Equivalent combinations of post-high school education and specialized experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.
Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled. See examples above.
