DOWL Bridge Engineer - Mid-Level in Billings, Montana
The Bridge Project Engineer is responsible for leading the bridge design and analysis efforts on a variety of engineering projects. The person in this position must be a licensed engineer to practice bridge engineering in the state of primary practice or should be licensed in a different state with the ability to get the required license within 6 months of hire. The person in this position must have a strong knowledge of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and the bridge design standards in their state of primary practice and be able to quickly learn and apply other design codes as necessary to meet project objectives. The person in this position is also expected to demonstrate a high level of expertise related to bridge engineering and provide leadership and guidance to less experienced team members as necessary. This position requires a willingness and ability to identify and lead resolution of interdisciplinary design issues.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
Perform bridge engineering related calculations, analysis, and design.
Independently complete highly complex engineering projects.
Independently write technical specifications, reports, and other correspondence to a variety of audiences.
Lead the design efforts in the role of engineer-of-record on a variety of project types.
Perform independent checking and senior review of the design work of other team members.
Efficiently work with drafters to assemble complete and accurate engineering plans
Work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams.
Lead the development of simple to moderately complex project scopes, schedules, and budgets.
Provide design oversight.
Expertly employ a variety of design codes related to the industry.
Coordinate drafting requirements for bridge engineering design projects.
Meet with potential clients and teaming partners to help develop new business development opportunities.
Coordinate with government agencies, client staff, and other professionals to obtain design information and approvals.
Demonstrate bridge engineering expertise by presenting projects or writing papers for industry associations as directed.
Consistently exercise discretion and judgment in all work tasks.
Learn and apply company standards and best practice.
Follows DOWL’s safety program and maintain a safe work environment at the office and in the field.
Follows DOWL’s Operational Excellence program to maintain a high standard for deliverables and engineering calculations.
Other duties as assigned.
Supervises a team of Bridge Engineers (from intern to level 4) in the Bridge Engineering Department. Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience
This position requires a Bachelor's degree in engineering (civil, structural) from an accredited university and 8 years’ progressive experience or a Master’s degree in civil engineering (civil, structural) and 7 years’ progressive experience
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
PE Required: This position is for a licensed engineer to practice civil engineering in the state of primary practice or should be licensed in a different state with the ability to get the required license within 6 months of hire.
SE Preferred: A license to practice Structural Engineering in the state of primary practice is preferred.
Must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical analysis, and fundamentals of geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Job Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesRequired
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with abstract and concrete variables.
Must be able to use Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and Project software.
Advanced proficiency working with drafters to assemble complete and accurate engineering plans.
Strong understanding of structural behavior and mechanics of materials.
Accurately complete engineering calculations for all major material types including concrete, steel, timber, and/or masonry.
AutoCAD and/or MicroStation knowledge and experience is highly desirable.
Advanced level proficiency with MathCAD.
Advanced level proficiency with one or more of the following structural analysis programs: SAP2000, Risa3D, Midas, or GTStrudl.
Advanced knowledge of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications.
Advanced understanding of seismic design principles and non-linear analysis techniques.
Ability to prioritize special projects and daily workload to ensure that all work is completed in a timely and efficient manner.
Exceptional technical and communication skills.
Strong organization skills.
