Cardiovascular Radiology Technologist

CATH LAB (Billings Clinic Main Campus)

Employment Status: Full-Time (.75 or greater)

Hours per Pay Period: 1.00 = 80 hours(Non-Exempt)

Starting Wage DOE: $25.14 - 31.17

With minimal supervision, assists with all cath lab procedures including diagnostic and interventional caths and electrophysiology procedures. Able to meet all performance standards in scrub, panel and circulating positions. Responsible for patient and family education and support. Responsible for all aspects of quality angiographic imaging and film processing, and functions as a department resource in this area.

Essential Job Functions

• Scrub: Scrub assistant to the physician. Sets up and maintains the sterile field as well as arterial and venous lines. Positions patient while under the radiation beam to visualize cardiac anatomy, assists in catheter/wire manipulation, injects coronary arteries for the visualization of cardiac anatomy.
• Circulator: Monitors the patient condition and response to treatment pre, during and post procedure. Maintains proper documentation on cardiac cath lab assessment forms. Circulators need to have a basic knowledge of medications patients are receiving in the cath lab. Provides procedural education for patients and family. Safely transports patients to and from the cath lab. Verifies proper patient preparation pre-procedure. Gives and receives patient reports to the nursing units. Performs arterial/venous sheath removal. Able to operate and troubleshoot cath lab procedural equipment.
• Panel: Monitors patients throughout diagnostic and interve ntional procedures. Responsible for identifying changes in patient’s rhythm and hemodynamic status. Responsible for accurate and thorough data collection, measurement and calculations. Performs angiographic analysis. Operates x-ray equipment, balancing quality imaging with radiation safety. Able to function independently with hemodynamic monitoring equipment which includes operations, troubleshooting and calibration. Completes patient charges. Functions as the primary person to communicate with nursing units, OR and patient’s families as needed. Responsible for documentation of any equipment problems during the procedure and contacting appropriate repair service.
• Operates, monitors, evaluates and troubleshoots angiographic imaging and processing equipment. Appropriately notifies and documents service needs and provides follow-up. Serves as a technical resource to the department for radiographic equipment. Responsible for the orientation and training of staf f members to radiographic equipment and radiation safety including annual training and documentation. Maintains all aspects of the department angiographic imaging program. Responsible for radiation safety apparel and radiation badges. Provides appropriate monthly and annual service reports to the hospital radiation physicist. Ensures radiological services provided are in compliance with standards established by the institution, state, local and federal agencies.
• Informs management of any unusual concerns, situations or conditions relative to staff, patients and physicians.
• Identifies needs and sets goals for own growth and development; meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements. Maintains working knowledge of all products/procedures related to diagnostic and interventional caths and electrophysiology procedures. Keeps current on radiographic technology that may improve the quality of care in the department.
• Maintains compe tency in all organizational, departmental and outside agency safety standards relevant to job performance. Participates as an active member of the department radiation safety/darkroom committee that requires 100% attendance.
• Communicates regularly with other staff regarding changes in the work flow schedule or physician protocol.
• Assists in identifying products needed (out of stock or new items) and helps restock and clean rooms.

• Electrocardiography
• Pharmacology as it relates to cardiac drugs and conscious sedation
• Instrumentation, physics, chemistry and mathematics
• Quality improvement and quality control processes
• Principles, practices and techniques of radiography, cardiovascular imaging, intravascular sonography
• Emergency procedures
• Guidelines for age appropriate care
• Infection control procedures
• Transportation/moving of patients utilizing proper body mechanics
• ACLS guidelines and ECG interpretation
• Normal and abnormal laboratory findings including blood gases
;• Open wound sterile technique in theory and application according to CORN standards

• Teach radiography concepts to members of the cardiology team

• Maintain flexibility to adapt to a variety of workload assignments
• Function as a preceptor to new cath lab employees in the scrub/panel position
COMPLEXITY & DIFFICULTY:
• Independent judgment is required when recording hemodynamic data. Errors in judgment can result in inaccurate data and incorrect di agnosis/treatment. Errors in judgment, while assisting physicians may result in air emboli, infection, thrombosis, myocardial infarction, dysrhythmias or death.
• Flexibility to adapt to a varied workload assignment. Expected to rotate to three different positions in the department in diagnostic and interventional procedures and also in electrophysiology procedures.

Minimum Qualifications
Education

Graduate of a recognized approved American Medical Association Council of Education program in Radiological Technology

Experience

2 years work experience as a Radiology Technologist
Certifications and Licenses at hire

Certification by the American Registry of Radiological Technologists or board eligible
Current CPR Class C certification
ACLS certification preferred
Current Montana license as a Radiology Technologist
