Phillips 66 Chemist Co-Op, Billings Refinery in Billings, Montana

The Chemist Co-Op in the Billings Refinery Laboratory is an approximately 15-24 month temporary training program for students pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in a hard science field with a major or minor in Chemistry. Typically, students will enter the program prior to their junior year of chemistry studies. As a participant in this program, students are expected to work up to two years. Typically, this position works 20 hours per week during the school year, and 40 hours per week during the summer. This provides participants with the flexibility to maintain a college class schedule while completing the program.

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Assisting Chemists and Lab supervisors in day-to-day operation of the laboratory and ensure tasks are carried out in a timely and consistent manner

  • Ensuring the calibration of all laboratory equipment

  • Assessing product conformance to specifications

  • Performing specialized testing and conduct analysis

  • Ensuring the fulfillment of customer technical requests (e.g. samples, data, testing procedures)

  • Assisting in laboratory support for optimization and troubleshooting of process units

  • Performing required Quality System activities, including managing testing methods and procedures, designation of finished product status and Corrective/Preventive Action System duties

  • Backfilling for Laboratory Chemists when absences occur

  • Supporting refinery Optimization and Planning with regard to production insight

  • Assisting with coordinating refinery test run sample schedule and testing, including shipping and liaison duties to outside laboratories

  • Supporting refinery chemical cleaning programs

  • Participating in Lab Chemist Network

Required Qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions

  • At least 18 years old

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent

  • Must currently hold or be able to qualify to receive a Transportation Worker’s Identification Credential (TWIC) card prior to employment start date

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biology, or Engineering with a Major or Minor in Chemistry

  • Willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following:

  • Maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (clean shaven)

  • Commitment to 20 hour work week during school year

  • Commitment to 40 hour work week during summer months

  • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear, and eye protection)

  • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases

  • Work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and heat

  • Work overtime

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong technical/science competency as demonstrated through cumulative and major GPAs of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale

  • High regard for safety and quality

  • Displays high ethical standards

  • Strong interpersonal communication, both written and oral presentation skills; ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization

  • Analytical/technical skills with a practice approach to problem solving

  • Detail oriented

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

  • Good time management skills and the ability to work with deadlines

  • Organizational skills and ability to prioritize responsibilities

The Billings Refinery is located in Billings, Montana. Its facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of Canadian heavy, high-sulfur crude oil delivered by pipeline, and domestic crude oil delivered by truck. With the startup of a new vacuum distillation unit in 2017, the refinery has 100 percent heavy crude processing capability. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels and petroleum coke. Finished petroleum products are distributed by pipeline, rail car and truck. Pipelines transport most of the refined products to markets in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Colorado and Washington.
