Histology Tech

LAB-HISTOLOGY (Billings Clinic Main Campus)

Shift: Day

Schedule: M-F, Various hours

Employment Status: Full-Time (.75 or greater)

Hours per Pay Period: 1.00 = 80 hours (Non-Exempt)

Starting Wage DOE

Under general supervision, follows established procedures for preparation of surgical and autopsy specimens. Prepares mounts on slides and stains or treats tissue with chemicals so as to reveal specific structural details under microscopic analysis. Perform histology duties to prepare material for pathologic evaluation. Additional characteristics for the Lead Role: Acts as a lead for an assigned area of department, including assisting with the day to day operations of the department, responsible for quality control and regulatory readiness of department.

Essential Job Functions

• GENERAL

Supports and models behaviors consistent with Billings Clinic’s mission, vision, values, code of business conduct and service expectations. Meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements. Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental and outside agency standards as it relates to the environment, employee, patient safety or job performance.

Reviews clerical information including the labeling of the specimen and requisition, reconciling any discrepancies detected in labeling. Documents and evaluates clerical discrepancies on the appropriate quality assurance forms.

Aids in the performance of intra operative consultations when requested by pathologist.

Embeds, cuts, stains and coverslips slides efficiently.

Performs de-calcifications and other procedures as appropriate to enhance tissue sectioning.

Prepares laboratory solutions and reagents according to established procedures and exact formula in order to maintain adequate quantities for daily work assignments.

Utilizes performance improvement principles to assess and improve quality. Records and reviews quality control data.

Catalogs and files reports and materials as needed.

Distributes processed slides to Pathologists for review.

Assists lead in supply inventory for section.

Participates in writing procedures.

Assist lead with special projects.

Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.

• Incorporate population specific needs into all aspects of communication and patient care; scope of services provided will encompass age groups ranging from infant through geriatric

• Perform precise and meticulous work when mixing reagents and solutions and cutting and embedding tissues

• Analyze data and make independent judgments regarding selection of appropriate procedures, equipment and supplies

• Concentrate and pay close attention to details

• Work effectively in a team environment

• Work independently with general supervision

• Utilize time management concepts and maximize time effectively

• Maintain flexibility to adapt to a variety of work load assignments

• Apply and adhere to established policies, practices and standards; identify non-compliance and coordinate with the appropriate team members

• Errors in specimen preparation may lead to delay or treatment and/or misdiagnoses

• Failure to maintain safety standards may result in illness or injury to employees and/or patients

• Errors in specimen handling may result in customer satisfaction issues

• Uses appropriate judgment in assessing tissue requirements in all aspects of histologic technique.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • High School or GED

• Completed training and passed six (6) month competency on routine histology tasks.

• Histology Technician I:

Skilled in Routine Histology tasks

Passed one (1) year competency on routine histology tasks.

• Histology Technician II:

Completion of an accredited histotechnology program OR 60 semester hours of academic credit AND one year full time experience

ASCP HT certification required prior to start date

Minimum of two (2) years of experience,

• Histology Technician III:

Completion of an accredited histotechnology program OR 60 semester hours of academic credit AND one year full time experience

ASCP HT certification required prior to start date

Minimum of five (5) years of experience,

ASCP QIHC certification OR hold a college degree in a related field of study

• Histology Technologist I:

Bachelor’s degree and completion of an accredited histotechnologist program OR a Bachelor’s degree AND one year full time experience

ASCP HTL certification required prior to start date

• Histology Technologist II:

Bachelor’s degree and completion of an accredited histotechnologist program OR a Bachelor’s degree AND one year full time experience

ASCP HTL certification required prior to start date

Minimum of two (2) years of experience.
