Job Summary

Under general supervision, follows established procedures for preparation of surgical and autopsy specimens. Prepares mounts on slides and stains or treats tissue with chemicals so as to reveal specific structural details under microscopic analysis. Perform histology duties to prepare material for pathologic evaluation. Additional characteristics for the Lead Role: Acts as a lead for an assigned area of department, including assisting with the day to day operations of the department, responsible for quality control and regulatory readiness of department.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Essential Job Functions

• GENERAL

Reviews clerical information including the labeling of the specimen and requisition, reconciling any discrepancies detected in labeling. Documents and evaluates clerical discrepancies on the appropriate quality assurance forms.

Aids in the performance of intra operative consultations when requested by pathologist.

Embeds, cuts, stains and coverslips slides efficiently.

Performs de-calcifications and other procedures as appropriate to enhance tissue sectioning.

Prepares laboratory solutions and reagents according to established procedures and exact formula in order to maintain adequate quantities for daily work assignments.

Utilizes performance improvement principles to assess and improve quality. Records and reviews quality control data.

Catalogs and files reports and materials as needed.

Distributes processed slides to Pathologists for review.

Assists lead in supply inventory for section.

Participates in writing procedures.

Assist lead with special projects.

Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.

• Additional Histology Technician II Essential Functions

Assists lead with the orientation of new staff and ongoing training/education for staff. Participates in and provides input into interviewing and hiring.

Evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of specimens for analysis

Assists lead in the evaluation of new techniques and procedures in the laboratory

• Additional Histology Technician III and Histology Technologist II Essential Functions

Assists lead with the orientation of new staff and ongoing training/education for staff. Participates in and provides input into interviewing and hiring.

Assists lead in the evaluation of new techniques and procedures in the laboratory

Evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of specimens for analysis

Differentiates and resolves technical, instrument, physiological causes of problems or unexpected results

Reviews QA data for random and systematic events and reports findings to lead. Assists lead to develop recommendations for implementations.

• Additional Lead Duties

Acts as lead for assigned department. Assists in the management of the day to day operations of department. Responsible for orientation of new staff and ongoing training/education for staff. Responsible for maintaining daily staffing in area. Participates in and provides input into interviewing, hiring, performance appraisals and disciplinary procedures. Leads staff meetings.

Responsible for coordinating regular maintenance activities and supply inventory. Participates in the evaluation of supplies, including quality and costs.

Provides technical expertise and support. Acts as a resource for technical issues. Coordinates with leadership on new technology implementations.

Responsible for ensuring adherence to regulatory standards and ongoing regulatory readiness of department and staff. Evaluates and maintains records of quality control procedures. Responsible for policies and procedures designed to meet regulatory standards.

Completion of an accredited histotechnology program OR 60 semester hours of academic credit AND one year full time experience

ASCP HT certification

Minimum of five (5) years of experience

ASCP QIHC certification OR college degree in a related field of study

Other Minimum Qualifications

• Histology Technician III:

Completion of an accredited histotechnology program OR 60 semester hours of academic credit AND one year full time experience

ASCP HT certification required prior to start date

Minimum of five (5) years of experience,

ASCP QIHC certification OR hold a college degree in a related field of study
