POSITION SUMMARY

The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform a variety of customer service, general clerical, and basic bookkeeping and accounting duties in the maintenance of City financial records. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned supervisor, other City employees, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in a general office environment.

Full time or Part time hours available Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm!

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

  • Promotes and demonstrates the highest level of customer service and responds to citizens questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;

  • Administers the Sunset Hills Cemetery sale of plots and official records;

  • Enters and maintains records of miscellaneous accounts receivables and prepares invoices and statements as required;

  • Generates financial reports and other related documents at specified time intervals as directed;

  • Audits various department deposits and prepares deposits;

  • Reconciles and balances central cash registers daily and prepares bank deposit;

  • Assists customers at counter with applications, permits, licenses and processes payments;

  • Answers patrons' questions regarding detailed programmatic knowledge of departmental accounting operations in a courteous and timely manner as requested;

  • Performs clerical functions as required, including answering phones, preparing correspondence, and retrieving and purging obsolete files;

  • Assists other Treasury staff with payment processing and billing assistance;

  • Serves as a liaison between key Department personnel and other City departments and/or the general public, provides fiscal information, explains procedures, and provides technical information regarding related procedures and methods as requested;

  • Gathers, assembles, tabulates, proofs, balances and summarizes information for budget input, and prepares reports in proper accounting format for review as required;

  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions;

  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;

  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;

  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;

  • Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate's Degree in Accounting, Business Administration or a related field;

  • One (1) to three (3) years customer service experience, including accounts receivable and bookkeeping experience, some knowledge of government accounting is preferred;

  • 10-Key test, at least 100 strokes per minute is required;

  • Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Substantial knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles;

  • Substantial knowledge of Financial office procedures and practices;

  • Substantial knowledge of cash handling, balancing;

  • Substantial knowledge of word processing, database management, spreadsheets, and personal computer operation;

  • Substantial knowledge of or ability to quickly learn Federal, State, and City statutes and ordinances;

  • Substantial knowledge of or ability to quickly learn the functions of a local government;

  • Ability to interpret accounting reports and records and to analyze accounting data for control and reporting purposes;

  • Ability to make mathematical computations and tabulations accurately in a timely manner;

  • Ability to utilize specialized accounting software programs;

  • Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people, including ones who are angry or disagreeable;

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with assigned supervisors, elected officials, other City employees, and the general public;

  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions;

  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;

  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;

  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;

  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;

  • Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.

REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Offers for employment are conditional upon satisfactory response to appropriate post conditional offer process;

    1 FTE (40 hours per week)

    .75 FTE (30 hours per week)

    A .75 FTE provides enrollment in an established retirement system with significant employer contribution, prorated vacation and sick time accruals, and medical, dental, and vision benefits with a 75% subsidy from the City.

    .5 FTE (20 hours per week)

    A .5 FTE provides enrollment in an established retirement system with significant employer contribution, prorated vacation and sick time accruals, and medical, dental, and vision benefits with a 50% subsidy from the City.

    less than .5 FTE (less than 20 hours per week)

    A .46 or less FTE has the option to participate in an established retirement system with significant employer contribution, prorated vacation and sick time accruals, and holiday pay.
