This position is for a Driver Examiner within the Driver Services Bureau (DSB) of MVD. The DSB strives to deliver excellent customer service in a team-centered, fast-paced, high-volume environment. Most Montanans use a Montana ID or driver license in their daily lives. DSB works to confirm identities for our customers and to determine eligibility to issue secure driver licenses and IDs. This is important for public safety and to prevent identity fraud.
An examiner is responsible for all aspects of issuing driver licenses and identification cards, including review and analysis of identity documents, medical, and vision evaluations, conducting knowledge and skill testing, and fee collection. An examiner uses multiple types of hardware and software applications, applies federal and state motor vehicle laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Examiners also register voters, collect organ donor decisions, and selective service compliance.
Skills testing includes testing for operators of passenger cars and trucks, motorcycles, and commercial motor vehicles. Examiners also conduct Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) inspections. Testing and VIN inspections take place in all types of weather conditions.
Frequent contact with the public is an essential function of this position. The examiner must exhibit excellent customer service skills and display a willingness to help all customers with a positive attitude often under difficult and stressful circumstances.
There are numerous knowledge skills and abilities necessary to perform these duties. At a minimum the applicant must have a high school diploma or GED, including:
Three years of experience providing customer service.
Twoyears working in an office setting using computers, scanners, printers, tablets, and other office equipment; Microsoft Office and a variety of software applications.
One year of experience applying laws, rules, policies, procedures, and detailed instructions with minimal assistance.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially when dealing with a diverse customer base. Ability to manage and mediate confrontational situations and deal effectively with difficult people.
Team-building: show leadership qualities in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships to provide customer service.
Strong attention to detail.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
High degree of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism.
Basic money handling experience.
Must have a valid driver license.
Experience working with driver license credentialing and issuance processes.
Experience with Motor Vehicle Division software applications and programs (i.e. the Mainframe, MERLIN, image capture workstation, testing system, appointment scheduling systems, imaging, and courts.
Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case by case basis.
Applicant must be eligible to apply for a valid Class A intrastate commercial driver license within 6 months of hire.
