General Statement

At the Montana Manufacturing Extension Center ( MMEC ), our mission is to grow Montana’s economy by helping manufacturers succeed. We accomplish this by providing strategic business growth, continuous improvement, workforce development, technology, and supply chain solutions to Montana manufacturers for a fee. MMEC is an outreach of Montana State University and a part of the NIST MEP National Network. Field Offices in Bozeman, Billings, Butte, Great Falls, Kalispell, Helena, Missoula and Sidney serve the entire state. This position is located in Great Falls, and you will work independently from an office co-located with one of our partner organizations. The territory will include the entire state of Montana.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Proactively develop long-term strategic relationships with key local stakeholders including manufacturing business owners, local economic development leaders, educational leaders, partner organization leaders and local politicians.

  • Generate new business opportunities, expand the client base and promote MMEC services resulting in revenue generation, successful project completion and positive survey responses.

  • Develop and present proposals for the delivery of strategic growth, continuous improvement, workforce development, technology implementation, and supplier development solutions to manufacturing clients that result in measurable sales growth, job growth, or cost savings that meet key performance indicators.

  • Present results of projects to manufacturing clients and other stakeholders in a clear, concise and convincing manner.

  • Ensure manufacturing clients fully understand and are satisfied with their return on investment for the projects that you implement, that results in positive client survey responses.

  • Develop and present appropriate educational materials for training workshops and seminars.

  • Write reports and feasibility studies for manufacturing clients; manage, track and report project progress; develop and manage third-party subject matter experts.

  • Provide written expertise on manufacturing subjects for publication.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or business from an accredited university or college.

  • Demonstrated success in manufacturing leadership roles with increasing responsibility and variety that has resulted in significant business growth, cost savings, continuous improvement, workforce development, technology implementation or supply chain optimization.

  • Demonstrated success in persuading colleagues, partners, superiors, subordinates, or customers of the value of investing in a project, leading the project, and managing the project to successful completion.

  • Demonstrated ability to make managerial decisions based on financial data.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Ten plus years of demonstrated success in manufacturing leadership roles with increasing responsibility that has resulted in business growth, cost savings, continuous improvement, workforce development, technology implementation or supply chain optimization.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of strategic growth planning, client relationship management, partnership building, leadership development, coaching, mentoring, business marketing, financial management, product design, quality management systems, regulatory compliance, Industry 4.0, ERP , Kata, start-ups, technology commercialization, food safety, and cybersecurity.

  • Experience with executive level communications and interaction in management reviews, annual budgeting, strategic planning, and performance reviews.

  • Master’s degree in business or engineering from an accredited university or college.

  • Relevant licensing or industry recognized certifications.

  • Be a self-starter that can work with minimal supervision.

  • Have excellent human relations skills including public relations, client management, partnership development, leadership, coaching and mentoring.

  • Have excellent oral and written communication skills including public speaking.

    Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

The position will be based in Great Falls, Montana, and the location is not negotiable. Continuation of employment is contingent upon availability of funding.

Position requires frequent travel by rental car or own vehicle throughout the State of Montana. Overnight stays are required for quarterly staff and board meetings, national conferences, and periodic trainings.

Must possess currently, or be eligible to obtain, a valid State of Montana Driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points) or have other reliable means of transportation. Must have access to a vehicle to use for work (mileage will be reimbursed) and have minimum vehicle liability insurance. Do NOT send a copy of the driver’s license.

The successful candidate will be asked to provide any relevant manufacturing certifications.
