Position Details

General Statement

Under minimal direction from the Environmental Services Manager, the Custodial Services Department Manager supervisors 8 Area Managers who oversee over 100 Employees comprised of Custodian I/II and student employees. The Custodial Services Department Manager is accountable for providing on-site supervision and coordination of custodial staff and equipment; general custodial equipment maintenance; inventory control; purchasing of custodial equipment, cleaning products and supplies; training of all new employees; identification, implementation and enforcement of policies and procedures; professional and responsive customer service; and other duties in support of the department.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee and coordinate a staff of over 80 people working three shifts (AM, MID & PM) delivering custodial services to over 2,000,000 square feet of academic and research facilities housed in 60 buildings.

  • Responsible for hiring, evaluating and coaching/counseling staff.

  • Direct supervision of 8 Area Managers.

  • In conjunction with the 8 Area Managers, the Custodial Department Manager is accountable for training staff, inspecting work, reviewing timecards, ensuring the safety of the staff and work procedures, and working with other MSU departments to coordinate work tasks.

  • Must have an understanding of the operations, budget and capabilities of a wide variety of specialized custodial equipment and determine replacement and repair schedules.

  • Is the primary departmental contact for project managers, outside contractors, MSU employees, and the general public.

  • This position requires extensive knowledge and experience regarding methods of maintenance for a variety of building finishes.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • High school graduation or equivalent, plus three to five (3-5) years full-time (or part-time equivalent) custodial supervisory experience in a commercial or institutional setting.

  • Experience enforcing building, security and personnel policies, regulations and procedures.

  • Be able to determine and identify building types and uses on a multi-function campus.

  • Ability to follow and explain instructions, procedures, policies, and regulations, both verbally and in writing.

  • Demonstrated competence organizing and prioritizing multiple work assignments, meeting deadlines, and exercising adaptability to changing priorities.

  • Demonstrated experience using word processing, spreadsheet, and e-mail software. Microsoft Office suite preferred.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related field.

  • Experience managing all aspects of a custodial operation – people, equipment, supplies in a commercial or institutional setting.

  • Experience managing a multi building or multi account custodial operation with a large staff (30+) in a multi-shift environment.

  • Experience in equipment repair and maintenance.

  • Experience managing customer service at a departmental level.

  • Experience with CMMS /work order system.

  • Be able to manage a large, dynamic, and diverse work force serving an equally large dynamic and diverse customer group while meeting the expectation of a high level of customer service both within the department and across campus.

The hours for this position are typically from 6:30am-4:00pm (4/10 schedule within Monday-Friday workweek)

    Physical Demands

This position may transport up to 50lbs while: ascending/descending stairs; perform overhead work; safely and effectively operate a wide variety of tools, equipment, and vehicles. This position requires the ability to: position self to stoop, bend, and crawl, ascend and descend scaffolds, stairs, roofs, and ladders; and traverse long distances. Working conditions include but are not limited to: exposure to temperature extremes and inclement weather; working in/around fumes, dust, noise, and research-related activities; and working around equipment, machinery, and site conditions typical of a construction environment.
