Brief Position Overview

The Digital Marketing Strategist is charged with developing and implementing digital marketing strategies to increase student enrollment, enhance student retention, and enhance overall reputation of the university through the digital space. The Digital Marketing Strategist ensures a digital first approach is applied to key strategic areas, such as student recruitment and other areas outlined in the strategic plan. The majority of students use search engines to locate prospective universities. Search Engine Optimization ( SEO ) plays a critical role in MSU’s discoverability on the Web. Evaluating and enhancing MSU’s web analytics and digital footprint will be essential to meeting the goals of the strategic plan.

With a focus on enhancing top level university web resources, the incumbent will develop and interpret content for digital distribution and will ensure that MSU’s digital content reflects best in class communications. The Digital Marketing Strategist plays an active role in assisting the marketing and communications team in the development, creation and management of digital campaigns. They will identify high impact resources that can deliver an enhanced ROI and ensure resources are discoverable with a fine-tuned search engine strategy.

Housed in University Communications, and reporting to the director of marketing in collaboration with the director of web communication, this position interacts with creative services, photo/video team, web communications, social media, and news team as well as other internal constituents to develop and implement digital strategies.

General Statement

University Communications mission is to enhance MSU’s public image, increase the public’s awareness of MSU’s accomplishments and develop consistent communications that build our reputation. University Communications manages the marketing, promotional and licensing efforts of the university, supports and promotes MSU’s activities through expert and creative communications. We provide a wide range of services to the university community through our operational units: MontanaPBS, MSU News Service, MSU Creative Services, MSU Web and Digital Communications, University Marketing, MSU Public Relations and University Printing. Our staff includes media specialists, writers, editors, graphic designers, photographers, broadcast media specialists, publications specialists, marketing specialists, Web developers and printers.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create, update, and improve high-profile MSU academic landing pages with adherence to best practices, branding guidelines, and SEO

  • Translate universities’ recruitment and retention goals into digital strategy to increase student conversions on the MSU web domain

  • Conceptualize, write, and proof media-rich digital copy for online audiences with input from various campus stakeholders

  • Meet with academic and administrative units to improve the presence of their programs on montana.edu.

  • Manage, review, and react to user search data and analytics platform reports to refine content and navigation pathways

  • Identify and develop strategies to enhance academic program pages to enhance discoverability on the web.

  • Develop, implement and measure results of targeted digital ad campaigns.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business, Communications, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated strong writing and editing skills for online audiences

  • Experience with creation and editing of web pages using one or more content management systems (ex. Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla, etc.)

  • Skill in Microsoft Office suite and using web-based software applications

  • Demonstrated experience with the various components of Search Engine Optimization

  • Experience using Google ads console and developing strategy for paid search.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Familiarity with Google Analytics, Google Search Console, or other web analytics platforms

  • Basic working knowledge of HTML & CSS
