General Statement

A multi-year program aimed at assisting students in the exploration of, and preparation for application to, health professional school. The focus is on the courses required for competitive application as well as obtaining clinical exposure and development of well-rounded academic and extracurricular experiences.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Advising for both undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing medical school and other health professions

  • Curricular advising and career advising for graduate students (choosing the appropriate type of school: MD, DO, PA, DNP, etc.)

  • Reviewing application materials of applicants to MSU’s MS in Health Sciences program

  • Advising undergraduate students on preparing for and applying to medical programs.

  • Maintaining student files and information

  • Mentoring

  • Conducting seminar courses (HMED 140, 340, 594) and engagement of local medical professional as guest speakers in the seminars,

  • Coordinating the clinical practicum courses (HMED 240, 440, 540)

  • Coaching students of the process of applying to health professions schools

  • Facilitating and managing the multi-year process of students’ applications to health professions schools

  • Offering workshops, programming to engage students in application process

  • Coaching students through process of reviewing and selecting appropriate programs and schools

  • Preparing students for standardized tests

  • Coaching students for interviews

  • Coordinating and conducting mock interviews with faculty and local health care professionals

  • Promoting Health Professions Advising at MSU Fridays, orientation, or other recruiting events

  • Communicating with prospective students and families about Health Professions Advising at MSU

  • Maintaining data and statistics regarding students, applications, and acceptance rates

  • Collaborating with academic advisors and other campus partners to serve students interested in Health Professions

  • Maintaining HPA website

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Master’s degree and three or more years of relevant experience.in advising, health professions admissions, career development, student supervision and/or student services

  • Demonstrated ability and passion for advising, encouraging, and inspiring a diverse population of students.

  • A deep commitment to student success.

  • Excellent counseling skills.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently, along with willingness and ability to take direction and work as part of a team

  • Willingness to work on a schedule that may include occasional evening and weekend commitments.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Experience with academic advising or career development

  • Experience in health professions advising.

  • Work with social media communication and marketing as a means to engage students.

  • Knowledge of Excel, Access, and Powerpoint.

  • Reliable and consistent availability to advisees

  • Commitment to engage in developmental advising, as compared to prescriptive advising.

  • Skilled in guiding and supporting students’ journeys and academic development.

  • Provides support for student progress towards graduation and career goals.
