Brief Position Overview

Under general supervision of the Fire Technician Foreman, the person in this position will perform skilled Fire Technician work related to inspection, preventive and routine maintenance, programming, repair, renovation, replacement and improvement of university fire system assets. Work is performed individually or in conjunction with others as job conditions demand and is subject to overtime and call-outs outside of regularly scheduled work periods.

Position Details

General Statement

Facilities Services is charged with the maintenance and operations of all university buildings, grounds, and infrastructure systems. Facilities is comprised of the four service management areas of Environmental Services, Campus Maintenance, Engineering and Utilities, and General Operations, as well as the Business Management and Administrative areas necessary to support the Facilities operation. The Campus Maintenance section of Facilities Services is responsible for maintenance, repair, renovation, and replacement of buildings, grounds, equipment, and utilities for all university departments.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform testing and inspection on Fire Alarm/Suppression Systems.

  • Perform program modifications on existing fire alarm systems affected by university projects.

  • Assist Planning Deign and Construction, Engineering and Utilities in contractor supervision regarding Fire Alarm System manipulation and monitoring.

  • Incumbent will attend and participate in required training for the use of personal protective equipment and comply with requirements for use of employer provided equipment.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • High school graduation or equivalent, plus successful completion of electrician apprenticeship program, or equivalent combination of relevant education and/or work experience

  • Two (2) years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) recent journeyman-level electrical experience providing repair and maintenance services in an institutional and/or residential environment

  • Must have a valid Journeyman Electrician license. (If not licensed in Montana, please refer to the Montana State Electrical Board

  • Must be willing to commit to Fire Alarm Technician Training and obtain NICET I and NICET II Certifications within three (3) years

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the principles, measures, standards, symbols, materials, tools and safety practices of the electrical trade

  • Demonstrated competence accurately reading blueprints and wiring diagrams and sketching circuits.

  • A demonstrated understanding of computer programs similar to Microsoft Office Suite

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Experience as a Fire Alarm Technician or Electrician in an institutional setting, such as a college/university, military installation, or other large facility.

  • Possess NICET I or NICET II Certifications

  • Competence in panel programming and trouble shooting both on-site and remotely

  • Demonstrated proficiency in use of online fire system monitoring portal

  • Demonstrated competency in proprietary fire alarm systems such as Edwards (typically manufacturer sponsored training)

  • Possess a State of Montana Fire Protection License

  • Experience balancing multiple work assignments, meeting deadlines, and exercising adaptability to changing priorities.

  • Experience with interfacing with a Computerized Maintenance Management System.

    Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

    Facilities Services will sponsor all training, licensing, and certifications to progress through the Fire Alarm Technician Ladder

Fire Alarm Technician I- $39.94/hour

Staff at this level meeting the minimum qualifications listed above

Fire Alarm Technician II- $42.34/hour

In addition to meeting the position requirements of the Fire Alarm Technician I, Fire Alarm Technician II candidates possess enhanced technical capabilities in Fire Alarm Panel programming and troubleshooting both on-site and remotely. Candidate must have NICET II and obtain a State of Montana Fire Protection License within 30 days. Candidate must also be familiar with a Computerized Maintenance Management System.

Fire Alarm Technician III - $44.88/hour

In addition to meeting the position requirements of the Fire Alarm Technical I and Fire Alarm Technician II, Fire Alarm Technician III candidates will have the ability to oversee maintenance, testing, and inspection programs and complex projects from start-to-finish with minimal supervision for all aspects of a campus Fire Alarm System. Candidates must be certified in proprietary fire alarm systems such as Edwards (typically manufacturer sponsored training).

Physical Demands

  • This position is subject to overtime and callouts outside of regularly scheduled work periods.

  • The ability to move up to 50 lbs.

  • Perform regular investigations of facilities, systems and equipment which involves performing overhead work, accessing confined areas, manholes, vaults, tunnels, ascending/descending roofs, catwalks, scaffolds, and ladders.

  • Safely and effectively operate a wide variety of tools, equipment, and vehicles.

  • Working conditions include exposure to temperature extremes, inclement weather, fumes, dust, noise, heights, energized/pressurized systems, and research-related activities.
