General Statement

This position assesses and prepares digital files submitted for printing with a focus on quality customer service. This position also operates several high-speed printer/copiers, large-format printers and a bindery equipment for quality copying and printing services in support of University Printing Services and Montana State University’s objectives.

University Printing’s mission is to provide the MSU community with print, binding and file services that support the objectives of MSU and deliver outstanding customer service.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assesses digital files submitted for production and makes adjustments as needed to provide accurate files for digital color, black ink or press printing in a timely manner.

  • Operates, maintains and troubleshoots one high-speed digital printer/copier and two large-format printers.

  • Under the supervision of the duplicating services supervisor, provides support for Web submission print jobs and digital file output as needed.

  • Provides professional and effective customer service to all customers when answering telephones and assisting walk-in customers.

  • Works directly with customers taking in work order specifications, communicates with customers at all stages of the printing process to assure quality products.

  • Operates departmental bindery equipment.

  • Estimates materials required for jobs and monitors materials and paper consumption when larger copier orders are received in the department to assure that stock is available for jobs.

  • Maintains and catalogues archived files of non-time sensitive color jobs.

  • Regularly updates knowledge of prepress software applications and provides information to the supervisor on technological updates.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Progressively responsible experience in prepress digital file manipulation and adjustment using Microsoft Office programs and Adobe Creative suites, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

  • Demonstrated experience operating, maintaining and troubleshooting high-speed digital printers/copiers and bindery equipment.

  • Demonstrated experience in determining the best materials and processes to provide accurate job estimates as well as track progress of work orders, follow through and troubleshoot when required.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Demonstrated experience in training on prepress digital files, layout and printing.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize work in an orderly fashion that meets customer deadlines and quality standards.

    The Successful Candidate Will

  • Will be able to translate technical aspects of a work order into terms that the customer can understand and use to work with the graphic designer for best outcomes.

  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills with customers, team members and vendors, especially while under pressure during times of high activity and deadlines.

  • Able to work as a team member taking the initiative to help print shop staff during times of high activity and deadlines.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize work in an orderly fashion that meets customer deadlines and quality standards.

  • Represent the University Printing Services and Montana State University and its programs in a professional and courteous manner.
