Brief Position Overview

This Director of the Interior Design Program works closely with the faculty and staff at Gallatin College and MSU -Bozeman. The director will develop, implement, evaluate and provide a comprehensive program of services for the Interior Design program. Additionally there are teaching responsibilities associated with this position. This position will support the development of new design focused certificates or courses as the college grows. This position will also provide minimal support for other Design oriented programs at the college, including the Drafting and CAD program and potentially a new Graphics Design program. All responsibilities are carried out in compliance with state law, federal law, college policy and procedures and accreditation standards.

General Statement

Gallatin College is seeking a Program Director for the Interior Design Program. This Program Director oversees the Associate of Applied Science in Interior Design. The Program Director for Interior Design has teaching responsibilities and will administer overall operations for the Interior Design program and provide light administrative support for other design programs. This is an annual contract with administrative and faculty contract duties.

Gallatin College at Montana State University ( MSU ) is Southwest Montana’s two-year college, offering associate degrees and one-year professional certificates. The mission of Gallatin College’s Interior Design Program is to prepare students with the skills necessary for employment in the Interior Design profession. Our teachers and staff work closely with individual students to provide guidance, help them learn in their own ways, provide career advice and most importantly, ensure student success.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Recruit, hire, supervise and manage non-tenure track faculty to ensure quality of instruction meets Interior Design industry and accreditation standards in accordance with college policies.

  • Teach a couple of courses a semester in any Interior Design or other Design course that is offered.

  • Be available to teach and support faculty and students during the evening hours when needed.

  • Summer hours will also be required not more than 10 hours a week and those can be flexed.

  • Coordinate program activities alongside Gallatin College administration, faculty, and staff.

  • Develop and implement the request, purchase and maintenance of instructional equipment and supplies to ensure inventory control and efficiency for the program.

  • Foster positive student and industry relations, including coordination of the Interior Design Advisory board.

  • Monitor and research national trends in interior design and related fields to ensure quality services and course offerings to a broad range of students.

  • Evaluate success of program on an annual basis to include student, alumni, and employer satisfaction, based on assessments of students, and employers.

  • Make needed improvements to the program, which may include new programs or courses. These could include Graphic Design and working with the start up of the Construction Trades Division.

    *Works closely with the Design and CAD Program Director on administrative tasks, may share some faculty between programs and design curriculum that supports both programs.

  • Recruit, retain, and graduate students according to college expectations.

  • Seek relevant industry certification that ensures quality and industry connection.

  • Prepare reports as necessary for internal and external review.

  • Serve on campus committees to foster a supportive institutional climate and an informed faculty and staff support network.

  • Oversees academic advising with student success team for all Interior Design students, from orientation to graduation.

  • Seeks industry accreditation for the program to ensure quality; assist in the improvement of the program, and

    maintain relevance of education with the industry.

    *Implements student tracking systems, direct the collection of data at key points identified in the evaluation plan, including retention, graduation and placement rates.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Associate’s degree in Interior Design subject matter, or related field.

  • At least 3 years demonstrated experience in private and/or public industry in an interior design capacity.

  • Experience networking with local interior design partners.

  • 3 years experience teaching or training in a educational setting or in industry.

  • At least one of the following credentials/certifications LEED -AP, WELL -AP, NCIDQ certification.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in CAD and Revit.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.

  • Certification as an Interior Designer or equivalent.

  • Experience teaching in an educational setting.

  • Experience teaching and administration in a technical or community college.

  • Use of technology beyond basic computer skills.

  • Use of simulation technology for teaching-learning.

    *Membership in at least one of the following organizations: IDEC , IIDA , or ASID .
