IT Network Administrator - Bozeman, MT



Shift: Day

Employment Status: Full-Time (.75 or greater)

Hours per Pay Period: 1.00 = 80 hours (Exempt)

The Information Technology Department is responsible for the implementation, provision and support of all Information and Technology services within the organization. The department is a business services function that supports and contributes to the objectives of the organization. Members of this department are expected to fit into the organization’s culture and be committed to providing a high quality of service to customers. The IT Technology Team is responsible globally for the design, development, management, architecture, operation and full lifecycle of all network, server, and security equipment, including but not limited to: WANs, LANs, internet connectivity, all internal cabling/patching, security appliances, other network appliances, including the underlying network load balancing capabilities, servers, storage area networks, unified communications and remote network connectivity, whether hosted on premise or in third-party locations operating under contract with Billings Clinic. This also includes all datacenter management, equipment, and services. The Network Engineer has responsibility for installation, maintenance and evaluation of network systems and network transport. Troubleshoots complex network issues involving various factors. Conducts network architecture design, feasibility and cost studies. Must have extensive knowledge of routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless networks. Installs, configures, and maintains system software. Monitors network performance, troubleshoots issues, and deploys solutions. Plans and implements upgrades, patches, and installation of equipment. Creates and maintains disaster recovery, security, back up and restoration plans. Assists with evaluating new technologies to optimize network efficiency and performance. Responsible for daily administration of a network environment. Typically requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

Essential Job Functions

  • Supports and models behaviors consistent with Billings Clinic’s mission, vision, values, code of business conduct and service expectations. Meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements. Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental and outside agency standards as it relates to the environment, employee, patient safety or job performance.

  • Serves as the primary technology resource for the assessment and mapping of current and future state with gap identification/analysis, design, implementation, on-going development and maintenance of network infrastructure. Coordinates closely with Billings Clinic Leadership, staff members, Information Technology staff, key stakeholders including affiliates, managed and non-managed sites, and software vendors for the planning, analysis, design, implementation, evaluation and support of network infrastructure.

  • Acts as a liaison and expert resource for network infrastructure with the end-user community, clinicians and/or software/hardware vendor to identify problems and concerns regarding the overall performance and/or effectiveness of the technologies and workflows that impact users. Researches, analyzes and provides recommendations for corrective action to resolve problems with the internal functionality of the system and/or integration of information between systems. Collaborates with clients and technical resources and/or software/hardware vendor with recommendations for system enhancements, detailed information regarding technical or functionality problems and assists with implementation of recommended fixes.

  • Monitors the environment, technology and infrastructure to support optimal patient care and prevention of adverse events.

  • Ensures network infrastructure and corresponding policies and procedures, related to Health IT, follow appropriate Practice Acts, other applicable regulations and standards.

  • Performs additional duties as defined for specific IT Network Engineer Role. See table below. Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.

    Minimum Qualifications


  • 4 Year Bachelor's Degree in a related field


  • 0-2 years’ experience with network infrastructure/ architecture, remote access systems, internet connectivity and support services

  • Knowledge of LAN/WAN concepts

  • Computer skills from a Network WAN perspective

  • Experience with the configuration and incident resolution

  • Hands-on experience administrating, and troubleshooting switches and routers

  • Internet based IPSEC and SSL VPN tunnel experience

  • A basic understanding of the OSI model, Ethernet, HTTP, and TCP/IP\

  • Some experience with IP routing OSPF, BGP, EIGRP, and WAN technologies

  • Knowledge with LAN switching and VLANs

  • A practical level of experience implementing and administrating common TCP/IP based services, including DNS, HTTP, FTP, SSH, SMTP, etc.

  • Ability to process and resolve problems with input from Manager or other Information Services staff

    Certifications and Licenses

  • Industry certifications in networking preferred

  • Current Montana driver’s license and the ability to be insured to operate Billings Clinic vehicles
