General Statement

Culinary Services (CS), a division of Auxiliary Services, provides meals for over 12,000 customers. CS proudly provides Montana State University students with not only a repertoire of various cuisines, cooking styles, and flavors, but a comfortable atmosphere to meet friends, study, and simply relax. The division is comprised of 2 residential dining halls, 9 retail operations, Brick Breeden Fieldhouse and Bobcat Stadium Concessions, Fork in the Road food truck, MSU Catering, Indulge In-House Bakery & Salads, and the Farm to Campus Program.

The dining halls serve over 10,000 meals per day and are open 7 days a week from 7am – Midnight providing breakfast, lunch, dinner, and Late Night Bites. Specialty dinners are served multiple times a month highlighting Montana Made, holidays and other special events, and student/parent recipes.

Duties and Responsibilities

Work areas for these part-time positions will be assigned as needed across areas of the division. The position of Kitchen Help will work with the team to provide excellent customer service and a welcoming dining experience for our customers. General duties include:

  • Basic kitchen and line work in display cooking areas and/or the kitchen

  • Specialty drink preparation

  • Basic production of baked goods

  • Basic cleaning responsibilities

  • Dishroom and pots/pans

  • May be assigned to other areas in support of the department’s mission.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

2 levels of positions available:

  • Culinary Associate I – no prior food industry experience necessary ($14.00/hour)

  • Cook I – basic food industry experience ($15.00/hour)

  • Basic experience in a customer service position or a combination of relevant education and experience.

  • Basic food industry experience.

  • Positively and professionally perform all the functions of the position while providing excellent customer service

  • Exhibit interest in the culinary arts and exercise critically good judgment concerning taste, palatability and aesthetics of food quality

  • Exhibit strong communication skills

  • Work well individually or with a team

  • Consistently exercise initiative and good judgment

  • Exhibit accurate record keeping skills

  • Prioritize and organize workload in order to complete tasks in a timely manner

  • Quickly adapt to changing priorities

  • Follow health and sanitation guidelines for food preparation and handling

  • Work effectively and efficiently in close cooperation with CS staff in a team-oriented environment

Positions work primarily during the academic year. Hours can be up to an estimated 15 hours/week. There are a variety of shifts available.

May occasionally work outside and in inclement weather assisting with special events.

Physical Demands

  • Normal kitchen, cooler, freezer, dock environments.

  • Stationary and/or moving about for long periods of time.

  • Moving product up and down stairs.

  • Frequently moving containers/product weighing up to 50 lbs and occasionally up to 100lbs.

  • Moving while stocking product.

  • Using handles on small kitchen utensils and other equipment.

  • Performing repetitive motions related to job duties.

  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals on a daily basis.
