Brief Position Overview
Montana State University’s Liberal Studies program, located in the College of Letters & Science, provides undergraduate students with a broad, integrated, and interdisciplinary learning experience. The Liberal Studies program seeks pool applications for potential instructors typically for LS 101, LS 301, LS 451, LS 452, and LS 490 (formerly LS 401). These courses are regularly taught in the fall and spring semesters.

Position Details
General Statement
Montana State University seeks qualified individuals to provide non-tenurable level instruction and/or related functions. Instructors are needed to teach classes depending upon need and available funding.
The curriculum consists primarily of courses drawn from academic disciplines throughout MSU , but does include Liberal Studies (LS) courses including but not limited to: LS 101 – Ways of Knowing, a three-credit university seminar course; LS 301 – Integrative Seminar, a one to three-credit, junior-level seminar with rotating, instructor-developed topics; and LS 490 – Senior Project, a four-credit, senior-level thesis course. There are also several online-only courses to help support the Online Liberal Studies – Quaternity degree completion program.
Applications are accepted on a continual basis (unless otherwise indicated) and will be maintained in pool for two years. After two years, candidates will be notified to re-submit materials for continued consideration.
The department or program search committees or hiring authority will review and evaluate the submitted application materials. Applicants may be notified if their application is being retained in the non-tenure track faculty hiring pool.
Appointments are on a part-time basis and vary in duration, a couple weeks, a semester or an academic year, depending on the specific needs of the department/program. Salary is dependent on number of courses taught and duration.
We seek individuals who share the vision for the Liberal Studies program, work professionally and effectively with diverse individuals, possess effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to contribute positively to the academic success of the students and the mission of Montana State University.
Duties and Responsibilities
We aim to attract applicants who can teach in a diverse University community and have demonstrated ability in helping students from diverse backgrounds succeed.
Typical instructors will:
Design and/or deliver Liberal Studies/ Liberal Studies Online courses, as assigned.
If teaching online, complete specialized online training, peer mentor training, and regularly attend online workshops.
Assist with curriculum and/or course development, when applicable.
Collaborate with other faculty to ensure consistent standards across courses.
Participate in faculty meetings when called.
Participate in program and university assessment of student learning outcomes.
Hold appropriate office hours/ availability for student questions and concerns.
Meet & collaborate regularly with, and evaluate peer leaders/ mentors, if one is assigned to your section.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Master’s degree in field related to humanities, social science, natural science, or fine arts.
Demonstrated experience working with and engaging diverse students and colleagues within and outside a related program.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
PhD in field related to humanities, social science, natural science, or fine arts.
Demonstrated experience teaching interdisciplinary courses.
Demonstrated knowledge of college student development.
Terminal degree in field related to humanities, social science, natural science, or fine arts.
Demonstrated commitment to student, faculty, and staff diversity.

Non-Tenure Track Faculty – Any position that is .5 FTE or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University ( AFMSU ). Faculty covered by AFMSU may choose to pay membership dues. This is a condition of employment. Additional information can be found at AFMSU or by emailing AFSMU .
Any position less than .5 FTE is not represented by the Union and is not required to pay dues.
If the FTE changes during employment, the representational status of this position could be impacted.
Exceptions: Anyone having successfully completed a PEI exam or any faculty working in Extension are exempt from the Union.

The Department
Montana State University’s Liberal Studies program, located within the College of Letters & Science, provides undergraduate students with a broad, integrated and interdisciplinary learning experience. The program fosters connections among academic disciplines and draws on multiple areas of knowledge. Along with a number of related minors, three program options are offered: Quaternity (on-campus and also an online degree completion program option), Environmental Studies, and Global/Multicultural Studies.
