State of Montana Maintenance Tech - Bozeman in Bozeman, Montana

Applicants will be reviewed weekly. *_Duties:_ Performs a variety of work as a laborer, lead worker, equipment operator, and truck driver for highway maintenance activities. Operates a variety of heavy equipment, including but not limited to, loaders, motor patrols, backhoes, mobile brooms, snow blowers and trucks to perform maintenance activities such as culvert placement and installation; landslide removal; herbicide application; crack sealing; fence building or bridge repair; guardrail or sign installation; roadway repair; vegetation and roadside maintenance; striping operations; winter road maintenance operations. A working knowledge and understanding of the union contracts, environmental procedures, MUTCD, maintenance manual, standard drawings and traffic control operations. A working knowledge of basic carpentry skills needed for assisting the division-wide carpenter. Contract administration in conjunction with contracted pavement overlays, chip sealing, crack sealing and pavement striping projects. Responsible for the overall functional operation of machines including training of others, pre-operational checking, scheduled servicing, calibrating of equipment, adding fluids and changing blades, pins, teeth on buckets, etc. _Recruitment and Retention Bonus – for covered positions in Bozeman and Gallatin Gateway:_ Individuals hired may be eligible for a Recruitment and Retention bonus in the amount of $1,000.00. These employees may also be eligible for a second retention bonus after three months in the amount of $1,000.00 if the employee remains employed with the Agency, has fulfilled all obligations of their employment, and the Recruitment and Retention Bonus Program has not been discontinued or terminated by the Agency. This position is covered under a Career Ladder Advancement Policy (Level I - IV) and pay is based on the level. Pay and placement in the career ladder is based on time in grade, classroom training, practical MDT experience and successful completion of the MDT Maintenance Academy. Reaching maximum Maintenance Tech pay (Level IV) can take up to five years. _Education Trade Knowledge and Experience:_ Requires knowledge of highway maintenance and equipment typically assigned to a section, including basic diesel/gasoline vehicle maintenance; one (1) year experience driving heavy truck and operating construction equipment; basic math and record keeping; and the ability to make estimates of materials needed. Applicants not meeting the minimum qualifications may also be considered. If no qualified applicants, MDT is willing to consider a training assignment for individuals with no experience who would be eligible to obtain the CDL. _Necessary Special Requirements:_ A valid Montana Class A Type II Commercial Operators license w/endorsements for air brakes and tanker is required or must be eligible to obtain one within 30 days of hire. If the successful applicant doesn't possess the CDL, MDT would provide the truck and training for the succerssful applicant to obtain the required CDL. Successful applicant must live or relocate within 30 road miles of the work headquarters and must have a telephone or be reasonably accessible to the section headquarters.
