Position Details

General Statement

Following an integrated, collaborative model, University Health Partners (UHP) unites the components of the health and well-being for MSU students including prevention, health promotion, public health, medical services, dental services, and counseling & psychological services. The Medical Assistant will work with health care providers in the primary care area of UHP Medical Services.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform clinical duties under the direction of a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant including: a. Take and record vital signs b. Prepare patients for exam c. Assist health care providers with exams d. Explain exam/treatment procedures to patients e. Collect lab specimens f. Instruct patients regarding medications, referrals, follow-up appointments g. Administer medications h. Administer injections i. Perform ECG and Spirometry tests

  • Perform administrative support duties including: a. Make appointments b. Obtain and manage medical records c. Return phone calls when requested d. Manage returned lab/x-ray reports

  • Perform materials management duties including: a. Stocking offices and exam rooms b. Cleaning and sterilization of equipment c. Preparing exam room between patients

  • Perform customer service duties including: a. Listening and responding to patient needs b. Manage patient flow c. Assure privacy and confidentiality d. Assist other MAs/RNs to manage patient flow for the clinical group

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Completed an educational program for medical assistants

  • Passed a national certification exam to be either a Certified Medical Assistant or a Registered Medical Assistant

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Two or more years of experience working as a medical assistant or related field

  • Experience working with college students or young adults

  • Demonstrated excellent skills in patient care support functions

  • Demonstrated excellent skills in communicating with medical staff and patients

The Successful Candidate Will

  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers in a team-oriented environment

  • The ability to relate to and establish rapport with a college student population.

  • The ability to maintain excellent customer relations.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

  • Passed a national certification exam to be either a Certified Medical Assistant or a Registered Medical Assistant.

  • Current certification in basic life support (BLS) for health care providers.
