  • POSITION DESCRIPTION

  • POSITION SUMMARY

  • Working under general supervision, the phlebotomist will collect blood and body fluids, perform EKG's, communicate essential information to co-workers, maintain a professional manner in dealing with patients and co-workers, perform clerical duties such as filing, telephone communication and information system work, perform courier services to BDH clients and perform DOT urine collections and breath alcohol testing.

  • REQUIREMENTS

  • EDUCATION

  • Required:

    • High School graduate (or equivalent).
  • Preferred:

  • LICENSURE and CERTIFICATION

  • Required:

    • It is expected that the applicant will become certified as a DOT-urine drug screen collector and breath alcohol tester within 6 months of hire.
  • All training and training opportunities are provided by BDH. Training occurs at least every 6 months.

  • KNOWLEDGE OF, SKILLS IN, ABILITY TO, COMPLEXITY AND DIFFICULY:

  • KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Personal Computers, hardware and basic software programs.

  • Blood collection techniques and awareness of factors that contribute to specimen integrity.

  • EKG performance techniques and awareness of factors that contribute to proper testing.

  • Urine Drug testing collection techniques.

  • Breath Alcohol testing techniques.

  • SKILLS IN:

  • Evidence of good communication skills, organizational skills, and interpersonal skills

  • Collecting blood from venous, capillary and arterial sources.

  • ABILITY TO:

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize

  • Ability to work independently

  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • 35% Time Spent - Collects blood specimens from patients in a variety of settings.

  • 25% Time Spent - Performs EKG's on patients in a variety of settings.

  • 10% Time Spent -Performs clerical duties: filing, bill-checking, etc.

  • 10% Time Spent - Performs admissions, registrations and laboratory order entry.

  • 10% Time Spent - Performs therapeutic phlebotomies and autologous donation collections.

  • 10% Time Spent - ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs urine drug screen collections

  • Performs breath alcohol testing

  • Performs housekeeping chores within the Laboratory Information System

  • Answers the telephone and, with a minimum of transfers, gets answers to callers' questions.

  • Handles, ships, stores, retrieves and delivers patient specimens for testing.
