Atlas Project Engineer in Bozeman, Montana

Atlas is seeking a skilled Project Engineer to join our team, working on exciting remote transportation projects within U.S. National Parks and Forests. The Project Engineer will be responsible for supporting the planning, design, and execution of construction projects related to bridges and other transportation structures. This role requires a strong foundation in civil/structural design, construction, and materials engineering techniques, as well as the ability to apply judgment to complex tasks that involve independent evaluation, selection, and adaptation of these methods.
The Project Engineer will oversee day-to-day project engineering and management, ensuring the successful delivery of projects through all phases. Collaboration with inspectors, contractors, subcontractors, cooperating agencies, and state DOT or FHWA staff will be key in delivering quality projects.

Key Responsibilities:
Serve as a technical advisor for administering and ensuring compliance with construction contract terms within delegated authorities.
Manage a construction team, including supervising construction inspectors.
Monitor, document, and report on contract actions to the government.
Provide clarification and guidance to the Construction Contractor on contract-related queries.
Ensure the Construction Contractor’s work complies with contractual requirements.
Address inquiries from the public, landowners, and other stakeholders, in coordination with the Construction Manager.
Delegate daily work assignments and supervise staff as needed.
Review the construction schedule for compliance and reasonableness.
Enforce safety regulations in alignment with state and federal regulations.
Facilitate and participate in meetings with the Construction Contractor, client agencies, and the public as needed.
Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with established processes for contract management.
Process and approve submittals, invoices, and other contractor documentation.
Assist in preparing contract modifications, including independent cost estimates.
Review payrolls and perform labor standard interviews.
Competencies:
Strong ability to enforce compliance with construction contract terms and manage the project team, including supervising inspectors.
Expertise in preparing contract modifications, reviewing progress payments, measuring construction materials, assisting with claims responses, and reviewing submittals.
Skilled in analyzing project schedules, including critical path and bar chart analysis.
Experience overseeing environmental mitigation, including wetlands, endangered species, cultural resources, and more.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel) and familiarity with transportation construction contracts, specifications, and plan interpretation.
Knowledge of safety and labor laws, quality control/assurance, traffic control, and construction methods.
Experience with on-site inspection services in environmentally sensitive areas like National Parks and Forests.
Minimum Qualifications:
Experience:
10 years of progressively responsible experience in highway/bridge construction projects, with at least 6 years as a project or resident engineer on state or federal highway/bridge projects.
OR
Licensed Professional Engineer in Civil Engineering; or a BS in Civil Engineering/Construction Management with 5 years of on-site project administration experience in highway/bridge construction.
Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong time management skills.
Ability to meet internal requirements for company vehicle operation, with a valid driver’s license and insurable driving record.
Willingness and ability to travel to job sites, including remote areas, up to 75-100% of the time.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
Physical Demands & Work Conditions:
Ability to stand, walk, sit, lift, carry, push, pull, reach, handle, and perform physical tasks in varying environmental conditions.
Ability to lift and carry objects exceeding 50 pounds.
Ability to work extended hours and in both indoor and outdoor environments with extreme heat and cold.
Capability to work in and near industrial hazards and remote project sites.
Compensation:
$50hr-$75hr
The expected salary range for the position is displayed in accordance with the state’s law. Final agreed upon compensation is based upon individual qualifications and experience.
