Montana Tech Research Facilities Manager in Butte, Montana

Montana Technological University seeks a Research Facilities Coordinator to manage equipment installation and maintenance in multiple research laboratories at our Butte main campus.   The ideal candidate holds a a degree or certificate in engineering or technology or a combination of experience and education or equivalent (B.S. in an engineering discipline preferred) and at least three years of relevant work experience. Key qualifications include strong analytical and problem-solving skills, effective communication for collaboration with diverse stakeholders, and the ability to efficiently manage multiple tasks. This role involves overseeing facility maintenance, ensuring machinery and instrumentation operation, completing minor mechanical tasks, coordinating larger tasks with Montana Tech Facilities and/or external contractors, and fostering a safe working environment through strict adherence to safety protocols.

Duties:  

  • Provide prompt support for equipment placement, installation, commissioning, operation, decommissioning, and disposal.

  • Assess and address electrical and utility installation needs in laboratories and pilot plant areas; coordinate with Montana Tech Facilities Department or external contractors as required to ensure prompt response to work orders.

  • Develop and manage a preventive maintenance program for each research laboratory.

  • Oversee safety and security in designated research and teaching laboratories.

  • Maintain an inventory of research spaces.

    Required Qualifications:

  • A degree or certificate in engineering or technology or a combination of experience and education or equivalent

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in supervising the installation and maintenance of process equipment and instrumentation, with expertise in electrical, plumbing, and control systems.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of, experience with, and willingness to enforce general laboratory and chemical safety & hygiene protocols.

  • Proven ability to efficiently manage multiple projects and collaborate with research faculty, students, physical plant personnel, and external contractors.

  • Proficiency in completing equipment installation and maintenance tasks, including assessing and resolving electrical and piping issues for laboratory machinery, process equipment, and instrumentation.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to organize and catalog data for equipment and laboratory inventory.

  • Proficiency in the use of hand tools, power tools, and equipment for installing and repairing equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant engineering discipline (e.g., electrical, mechanical, chemical, or materials engineering).

  • Experience with chemical inventory management, including the use of software or apps.

  • Experience in the design, installation, and maintenance of process instrumentation and control sensors, controllers, and final control elements, with the ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, control diagrams, and maintenance manuals.

    Physical Demands (optional):

  • Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 lbs. and occasionally lift up to 75 lbs

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods

  • Capability to bend, stoop, and kneel as needed for equipment inspection, repair, and maintenance

  • Ability to reach overhead and across surfaces

  • Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and access elevated platforms to inspect and troubleshoot equipment

  • Ability to use required personnel protective equipment for extended time periods, required PPE may include safety glasses, respirators, hearing protection, steel-toed work boots, and other as required for specific tasks
