SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION

The Transmission Planning Engineer is primarily responsible for analyzing and planning for the reliable growth of the electric transmission system and maintaining compliance with reliability standards.

DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • All NorthWestern Energy employees are required to adhere to company safety standards and the Code of Business Conduct & Ethics

  • Ensure all actions are consistent with NorthWestern Energy's values, mission, and strategic business objectives

  • Develop base cases and conduct transmission system studies, using power flow and stability simulation software for use in planning, interconnection, and transmission service studies

  • Maintain in-house software packages for transmission planning studies

  • Use sound analytical skills to model, analyze study results, propose solutions to problems, and plan the transmission system

  • Maintain compliance with all related reliability standards including industry and regulatory

  • Prepare reports and present results to management and/or internal and external customers

  • Make recommendations to management on system improvements to mitigate identified problems

  • Coordinate projects between distribution and transmission planning with operations, supervisors, and construction managers

  • Provide technical support for construction and operation activities

  • Travel to jobsites, off-site meetings, and trainings (up to 5% travel per year) including overnight stays when necessary

  • Work all required hours including evenings, nights, and weekends along with on-call for acute emergency service needs

  • Perform individual lifts of supplies and materials weighing up to 35 pounds

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be able to demonstrate and maintain a good safety record

  • Engineering degree required, degree in Electrical Engineering preferred, programming skills a plus.

  • Basic understanding of electric system fundamentals

  • Ability to obtain a Professional Engineer's License is preferred

  • Excellent computer skills and proficient with Microsoft Office Suite

  • Knowledge of computer programming preferred

  • Knowledge of power modeling software preferred

  • First Aid/CPR Certification or the ability to gain certification preferred

  • Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record
