CDL Instructor

  • Prepare and present course descriptions, lesson plans, classroom lectures and laboratory work following the PTDI CDL-A Training Curriculum.

  • Develop handouts and other learning aids; implement techniques to facilitate student active learning.

  • Prepare and grade tests, quizzes.

  • Participate in program and curriculum development and outcome assessments.

  • Possess and impart knowledge, skills and actual performance abilities that far exceed the abilities identified in the objectives of the curriculum.

  • Clearly and effectively communicate instructions to students, assess student performance, and provide guidance on performing maneuvers on a skills driving range and in the truck on the roads.

  • Maintain confidential, accurate and complete records and reports as required by state and federal regulations.

  • Responsible for efficient and effective use of supplies, materials and trucks maintaining appropriate controls for loss reduction and reporting and documenting maintenance and replacement needs.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Current and valid CDL-A.

  • Current and valid DOT Physical Card.

  • Must be able to pass a DOT drug/alcohol screen.

  • Possess a safe CDL-A driving record.

  • OTR Driving: Three (3) years including a minimum of one (1) year as a recent long-haul/OTR tractor-trailer driver.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of safe truck driving and all of the laws and regulations covering tractor-trailer interstate operations.

  • Capable of demonstrating the curriculum subject matter to the students.


    Instructor must meet the minimum qualifications for interstate tractor-trailer drivers in accordance all requirements of the applicable Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, including but not limited to, meeting the physical and driver qualification standards of Part 391, as well as be able to pass a DOT drug/alcohol screen.


  • One (1) year of vocational education tractor-trailer driver teaching/driver training experience,

  • Or two (2) years of practical trucking related experience that demonstrates instructional competency.

  • Endorsements in Doubles/Triples, Tank and HAZMAT.

  • Possess an attitude towards professionalism, respect, motivation, maturity and safety.
