The incumbent works under thesupervision of theregional fisheries staff.Fieldand labwork may at times havehttlesupervision. The work planobjectives and tasksareestablished by thefisheries biologist and manager.Monthlyschedulesarecoordinatedwiththemanagementbiologist.Projectdirectionandassistanceis provided by thefisheries biologist, theregional fishmanager, co-workers, andpersonnel fromotheragencies. GlendiveislocatedalongtheYellowstoneRiverin theplainsandbadlandsof EasternMontana.Awidevariety ofmulti-specieshuntingopportunitiesexistalongthewoodedstreamcorridorsaswellasontheadjacent uplandhabitats.Fishingon theYellowstoneRiverand area pondsoffersthe chanceto capture a multitudeof differentspecies.ThepopulationforGlendiveisapproximately5,000.MilesCity,theregionalheadquarters, is 75milesto the southwest,and Sidneyis 50 milesto thenortheast. JobDuties : Employee will assist indatacollection for fishstudies related to theannual workplan including examining movements, passage atstructures, habitat use,and population demographics ofnative fishes onthe lower Yellowstone Riverandthroughout Montana Fish,Wildlife&ParksRegion7.Specificdutiesincludeworking onatwo-mancrewwhilecollecting large-riverfishusingaccepted protocols andsampling equipment suchas electrofishinggear,trammel nets, hoop nets,andtrotlines; implantation ofexternal tags,internal PITtagsand transmitters; collection ofgenetic tissuesamples and blood samples from pallid sturgeon; collectionofpallid sturgeon broodstock; telemetry relocationofnativespeciesfromjetboatandground-based stations; sample hatchery released juvenile pallidsturgeon toassessgrowthandsurvival rates by year class,collect blood samplestoassesssexual maturity, andcollect tissuesamplesfor inclusionintoagenetic library;andexecution ofother Regional Fisheries Programs onthelower Yellowstone River.Employeewill beresponsible forjet boatoperation andprevious boatingexperienceispreferred.Employee mustaccurately identify, measure,and record dataonallfishcaptured,operateanddownload datafromtelemetry equipment,completehabitatsurvey measurements, a?dtake water quality measurements.Employee willenterdataintoestablished databases and provide a weekly summary offielddatatothe regional biologist and monthly datasummaries atregional fisheriesstaffmeetings.Employeewillberequired tomaintainequipmentandtoolswithoutdirectsupervision. Position will besupervised byafishery biologist, butwork willoftenbecompleted independentlyorwith anotherseasonalemployee.Employeewillassistinpublicoutreachevents,landownercontacts,andmusthave the ability to effectively interact with the public. Fisheries researchandmonitoring will requiretheincumbent toworkinadverse environmental conditions whileperformingfieldsurveys.Additionally, theworklocationisnotinatownorareawherearegionaloffice islocated, therefore the incumbent needsto be responsible formaking and keeping their ownschedule.The incumbent should beable to,or rapidly learn, totrailer boats toand fromaccesspoints, launch boats,operate boats (often unsupervised) and workindependently afterdirections areprovided byimmediate supervisor. Musthave,orbeabletoacquire,theknowledge andability touseavariety ofsampling gearandtechniquesfor largerivers,streams,andponds(e.g.,trammel nets,trotlines,gillnets,hoopnets,electrofishingequipment,and Lotektelemetry equipment). Mustorganize and enterdataintoappropriate databases usingcomputers and associated software such as Microsoft Word and Excel. Navigationandmapskillswillbeessential.Mustbeabletolearnandindependently conductweeklytelemetry trackingrunsusingjetboats.Mustassistwiththemaintenance, repair,troubleshooting,andreplacement ofall sampling equipment (e.g. boats, trailers, motors, nets,telemetry equipment, etc.).Must monitor maintenance logsofallequipment and perform and/orschedule maintenancewhen needed.Must beabletocommunicate effectively withavariety ofdepartmental employees withdifferent levelsofeducationandexperience.Think independently and make timely decisions onestablished procedures and protocols tomeetdeadlines ofthe project or process. Education/Experience: Theknowledge, skills, andabilitiesofthisposition arenormally attained through combination ofeducation andexperience equivalent toahighschooldiploma, GED,orequivalent ispreferred. Experience or training in/resource/management, biology,laboratory,orworkclosely relatedtothespecificdutiesofthispositionis preferred.Other combinations ofeducation and experience will beconsidered ona case-by-case basis.
