Glendive Medical Center Medical Laboratory Scientist in Glendive, Montana

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS): including Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS), Medical Technologist (MT) and Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT) will collect, prepare, and analyze biological samples following clinical laboratory procedures, quality assurance, and complex medical instrument maintenance. The MLS will also maintain cooperative working relationships with intradepartmental and interdepartmental staff.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Assist with Medical Laboratory Assistant training and new Medical Laboratory Scientist on boarding and new instrument training.

    Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Performs routine and special laboratory tests to determine normal and abnormal components of body fluids by conducting chemical analysis of: blood, urine, CSF and other components. Recognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective action. Assists laboratory co-workers in resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from the department lead or laboratory management when needed up to and including consulting with a clinical pathologist.

  • Calls in critical test results to physicians or nurses immediately and according to established criteria. Maintains the critical and reportable results log according to protocol. Prepares legible test reports when collecting, analyzing and summarizing information on patient data/reports. Initials and dates work performed. Reviews reports for clerical accuracy and clinical indications.

  • Provides medical technology information by answering questions and requests.

  • Performs quality-control tests in designated areas. Analyzes quality-control data and studies such as platelet poor confirmation, instrument validation, new lot crossover, etc...and takes appropriate corrective action when results are outside acceptable limits. Assists laboratory co-workers in resolution of similar problems. Seeks help from the Lab Lead as required. Documents actions taken. Holds patient results until out-of-control situations are resolved. Reports unresolved situations to the department lead or laboratory management when needed up to and including consulting with a clinical pathologist.

  • Documents all instrument checks, preventive maintenance, routines, problems, and corrective actions taken. Recognizes, analyzes, and takes corrective action to resolve instrument/clinical problems. Ensures operation of analyzers and other laboratory equipment. Assists laboratory co-workers in the resolution of similar problems including monitoring, reviewing and communicating work in lab areas or responsibility. Seeks help from the Lab Lead as required. Reports unresolved instrument/clinical problems to laboratory management when needed up to and including consulting with a clinical pathologist.

  • Provides in-service training to other laboratory staff and students in a designated area.

  • Performs clerical functions associated with the designated laboratory area.

  • Contributes to the general laboratory functions and institutional needs. Performs specimen collection and processing duties according to policies established in the clinical laboratory.

  • Attends regular department staff meetings and in-service training.

  • Attends and participates in the preparation and/or presentation of the laboratory continuing education programs.

  • Observes laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, and safety practices. Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations.

  • Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory levels/expiration dates while conserving lab resources to accomplish laboratory quality results.

  • Demonstrates initiative and cooperation in order to maintain laboratory workflow. Including recognizing priorities and acting accordingly.

    Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree and the successful completion of an accredited medical technology program or the equivalent training, education, and experience eligible to test for MLS certification.

  • ASCP certification or equivalent nationally recognized medical technology certification or categorical certification. (Note: Those with categorical certification only will be restricted to the discipline in which they hold the categorical certification.)

    Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking to and from sample collection and while running tests.

  • Ability to move 30 to 40 pounds to stock supplies and support patients.
