Working Title Instructor/Assistant Professor of Electrical Technology

Brief Position Overview

Montana State University-Northern ( MSUN ), invites applications for an academic-year (10-month) Instructor/Assistant Professor of Electrical Technology to begin immediately. Effective teaching is the primary mission of this position and MSU -Northern. Make a lasting impact on student success, and in the trade’s industry as a whole by teaching electrical technology courses and supervise student electrical trainees in a two-year associate of applied science degree program.

The faculty member will teach approximately 24 semester credit hours of classes per year in the areas of basic electrical theory, hand tool and instrument usage, electrical distribution, and residential wiring practices and regulations.

The successful candidate will join the faculty of this thriving department in the College of Technical Sciences. Faculty work in person in a climate-controlled indoor setting typical of an office environment, and conduct instruction in indoor classroom spaces and two separate lab areas at our 115-acre residential campus located in Havre, Montana.

Annual Salary: Official offers of employment and salary are made exclusively through the Office of the Provost and will vary, as is consistent with the CBA , based upon each individual candidate’s unique combination of education and experience. The employment contract follows the academic year typically beginning in August and ending in May.

General Statement

The College of Technical Sciences at Montana State University Northern ( MSUN ), invites applications for an academic-year (10-month), Instructor of Electrical Technology anticipated to begin immediately.

Teach electrical technology courses and supervise student electrical trainees in a two-year associate of applied science degree program. The faculty member will teach approximately 24 semester credit hours of classes per year in the areas of basic electrical theory, hand tool and instrument usage, electrical distribution, and residential wiring practices and regulations. The faculty member may also be expected to use a variety of distance delivery mediums. The person in this position will also be responsible for creating, updating, and maintaining proper lab facilities. Since a significant portion of the two-year electrical program may be applied by students for an electrical apprentice in Montana, the successful candidate may be expected to help in a two-year apprenticeship experience for traditional and non-traditional students. Some of the leadership responsibilities will include the development of course material, laboratory experiences, and facilities as well as establishing corporate and labor linkages to ensure Northern graduates are ready to work in the electrical trade. In addition, the faculty may be involved in curriculum development, program growth, program assessment, working with an advisory board, and assisting in student recruitment efforts. Academic responsibilities will also include serving on campus committees, involvement in campus activities, and serving as an ambassador and collegiate member of the College of Technical Sciences.

Effective teaching is the primary mission of this position at MSU Northern.

Duties and Responsibilities

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • A journeyman electrician license with experience training apprentices;

  • Experience with modern electrical industry tools, practices, and regulations;

  • The willingness and ability to work as a collegial member of a team is a must;

  • Demonstrated recent industry work experience.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • A master electrician license with experience in apprenticeship training

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and willing to work on a Master’s Degree in a related field.

  • Note: Master’s degree will be required for tenure.

  • Excellence in written and oral communication

  • Demonstrated strength in interpersonal skills and attributes

  • Experience and willingness to embrace new technologies

The Program

MSU -Northern’s Electrical Technology program is the only program in the state to offer an Associate of Applied Science in conjunction with the State of Montana Apprenticeship program.

Additionally, the electrical program offers apprentices the opportunity to learn in hands-on courses, and covers a major portion of the academic requirements of an apprenticeship. As a result, up to 3,115 hours can be applied toward the total 8,000 required apprenticeship hours, and graduates are prepared to start their career with a firm foundation of knowledge and skill.

Graduates of the electrical program will have the capacity to perform basic electrical tasks with the supervision of a journeyman electrician on the first day of work. After approximately two to three years of on-the-job training and one test preparation course, the graduate will be able to apply to sit for their journeyman’s license.
