Job Summary

Are you an environmental sciences professional with at least 8 years of experience consulting with proposal, design, and construction teams to ensure required permits are acquired and projects comply with environmental commitments during construction? Are you looking for an opportunity to work with a dynamic team within an established global infrastructure consulting and engineering company? This position provides an exciting opportunity to join Black & Veatch’s Environmental practice to work with a team of professionals focused on ensuring environmental stewardship for our clients.

Key Responsibilities

Our environmental specialists and engineers provide critical support to our domestic and international clients in a particular subject matter/practice area. The Senior Environmental Sciences Specialist in our Environmental group will work as part a team of professionals to support our clients in achieving environmental compliance through every phase in the lifecycle of a project; from proposal to design to construction to closeout. The Senior Environmental Sciences Specialist will be an integral part of a client-focused team to deliver solutions to meet client’s needs by:

  • Leading & supporting the development of processes and procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of permitting management and compliance.

  • Independently supporting and leading small teams in the execution of environmental analyses, identification of applicable permits, preparing application packages, and acquiring permits in support of projects in various industries and geographic locations.

  • Preparing project deliverables in support of permitting and compliance as needed.

  • Conducting due diligence and site characterization study efforts for utility, utility-scale renewable, and other development projects.

  • Taking an active role in leading and performing Quality Reviews for project deliverables.

  • Developing and delivering internal training to engineering, project management, construction groups on environmental permitting and compliance topics.

  • Maintaining a current understanding of regulatory requirements and procedures.

  • Advising, coordinating, and consulting with leaders from the Proposals, Estimating, Design, Environmental, Safety, Health, and Security (ESH&S), and Construction teams.


Management Responsibilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental studies, environmental engineering, or sciences preferred. Other degrees, specialized training, or experience that uniquely qualifies the individual to perform the job responsibilities may also be considered.

  • 8+ years of experience consulting with proposal, design, and construction teams on infrastructure or industrial projects.

  • Demonstrated success providing strategic environmental consulting for a wide range of infrastructure projects.  

  • Knowledge of storm water regulations, permitting requirements, and sustainability practices.

  • Existing relationships with appropriate federal/state/local agency staff in support of project permitting.

  • Demonstrated experience leading the development of environmental impact assessment and review documents in compliance with NEPA or comparable state or international requirements. 

  • Experience leading and managing small teams to achieve timely and accurate project goals.  

  • Demonstrated experience in conducting quality reviews of deliverables.

  • Demonstrated experience in proposal and cost estimate development.

  • Positive, team-first, get-the-job-done commitment.

  • Highly developed critical thinking skills with proven problem-solving capabilities.

Minimum Qualifications

A minimum total of 10 years of related work experience is typically necessary to move into this level. All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.


Industry recognized credentials preferred as may be available and potentially necessary for job function.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

Work Environment: Typical office/home office environment. Physical Demands: Sitting, talking, grasping, hearing, keyboard input, driving, seeing, writing, reaching, stooping, crouching, walking, standing for extended periods of time.

Some travel out to sites will be required.
