Accounting technicians work in an office environment. They may experience eye and muscle strain, backache, headaches, and repetitive motion injuries from using computers on a daily basis. Technicians may have to sit for extended periods while reviewing detailed data. Most Accounting Technicians work regular business hours and a standard 40-hour week. This position does not allow for employees to work remotely.
Identity of applicants who become finalists may be released to the public if the Department deems it necessary. Employees who exceed 1,040 hours in a calendar year are also provided health, dental and life insurance. Other benefits include retirement, paid vacation, sick and holidays. This position may be covered by a VEBA (Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association).

This position computes, classifies, and records numerical data to maintain and monitor accounting records for the work unit. Performs a combination of calculating, correcting, reporting, and reconciling duties for use in updating and maintaining accounting records. Checks accuracy of entries recorded by other employees and makes corrections. Monitors coding, transactions, calculations, and bill postings.
Initiates, processes and submits financial documents, including accounts payable vouchers, purchasing card transactions, and journal entries. Works closely with department personnel to establish accruals and ensure appropriate expenses are applied to specific contracts.
Creates and runs reports. Reviews and verifies data to ensure transactions are properly recorded using computer software and take corrective action as needed.
Accounting technicians must be careful, orderly, and detail-oriented to avoid making errors and to recognize errors made by others. Should be discreet and trustworthy, requiring frequent contact with confidential material. This job requires the ability to work with customers, employees, and managers. They must have a strong aptitude for numbers. They must be able to use computers. Knowledge of bookkeeping or accounting software is especially valuable.
Education and Experience:
The above knowledge, skills, and abilities are typically acquired through completion of a vocational accounting program and two years of job-related experience, or a high school diploma plus four years of job-related experience in bookkeeping or accounting related job.
