State of Montana Bureau Chief in Helena, Montana

The Waste Management and Remediation Division is looking for two Bureau Chiefs to join our team with the Federal Superfund and Construction Bureau and Contaminated Site Clean-up Bureau. At the Department of Environmental Quality, our ultimate goal is to protect public health and to maintain Montana’s high quality of life for current and future generations. The Bureau Chief is responsible for providing overall vision, leadership, direction, and management to the Bureau and programs within the Bureau.The Bureau Chief develops approaches and solutions to the challenges faced by programs and works with stakeholders to cultivate support for Department initiatives. The Bureau Chief coordinates activities with those of other bureaus, divisions, and departments; participates in policy initiatives; and implements or directs projects of high priority to the Department. The Bureau Chief must consider a broad spectrum of factors when making decisions and recommendations, including technical concerns, public relations, legislative relations, public policy stances, effect on other organizations, departmental resources and mission, and economic impact. Both leadership positions are instrumental to move remediation processes forward and support long-term environmental and human health protection.

Individuals should have a diversity of experience in the following areas:

  • Business and management principles involved in strategic planning

  • Laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process.

  • Providing customer and personal services.

  • Personal recruitment, selection, training, compensation and benefits, labor relations and negotiation, and personnel information systems.

  • Effective management of multiple and competing high-profile, sensitive, or controversial issues.

  • Addressing and fostering developmental needs of others and coaching, mentoring, or otherwise helping others to improve their knowledge or skills.

  • Handling complaints, settle disputes, and resolve grievances and conflicts.

  • Ability to develop and implement innovative and unconventional approaches to challenging situations.

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

  • Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible experience.

  • Education or experience in a related field preferred.

  • Supervisory/management experience is preferred. Demonstrated experience in leading people is required.

  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
