Position Title: Business Intelligence Analyst

Location: Helena, Montana

Salary Range: $60,000 - $65,000

The Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education (OCHE) in the Montana University System (MUS) invites applications for the position of Business Intelligence Analyst. This position offers a great opportunity to join a fast-paced leadership environment in public higher education. In addition to strong initiative and teamwork skills, the successful candidate will have necessary experience in data and information management to be able to identify, analyze and communicate operational and other trends in the MUS.

This position is a full-time, term-contract position renewable annually in accordance with Board of Regents personnel policies. Helena, the state’s capital city, is located along the Rocky Mountains continental divide near the scenic Missouri River about half-way between Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks.

Description of Work Unit

The MUS is the state-supported system of higher education in Montana governed by the Board of Regents and administered by the Commissioner of Higher Education. The MUS enrolls more than 40,000 students at 16 public universities and colleges in one of the most beautiful and geographically diverse states in the nation. The Business Intelligence Analyst reports to the MUS Information Technology Director within the Budget, Administration and Planning Division of OCHE. The primary role of the Analyst is to query data contained within the system-wide data warehouse and to analyze trends, answer questions, and visually display results pertaining to financial affairs, human resources, and student outcomes. The Analyst will compile data from disparate source systems and build interactive reports to help present findings as well as provide self-service reporting.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the MUS Information Technology Director, the Business Intelligence Analyst will:

-Utilize various reporting and analysis tools to access, distill, and report on information contained within the System’s data warehouse

-Visually display results in dashboards using visualization tools (e.g. Tableau)

-Compile and verify data utilized for periodically scheduled reporting

-Develop an understanding of all data contained within multiple data marts and source systems

-Translate business requirements into technical requirements for enhancements and new custom reports

-Perform ad-hoc analysis to find solutions to business inquiries

-Perform regular data analysis monitoring to provide recommendations based on data

-Update, maintain, and improve the University System’s annual reports on Operating Budgets, Affordability Indicators, Financial Aid, Student Debt, and more.


The successful candidate will have established:

-Proficiency at using software applications to conduct data analysis, data extraction, and reports development (e.g. SQL, MS Excel and Access, SPSS, SAS, etc.)

-Proficiency in use of software packages designed to display data visually (e.g. Tableau)

-Experience in accessing data from large data sets and multiple sources, and recoding, merging, and aggregating data to perform analyses.

-Proficiency in statistical and/or financial analysis, with the ability to analyze detailed information and provide a concise summarization of results

-Effectiveness with written and oral communication skills.

-Ability to work both independently and collaboratively on a team.

-Ability to build and maintain good interpersonal relationships with work associates and internal and external constituencies.

-Demonstration of organizational skills, flexibility, good judgment, high energy, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.

Education and Experience

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in computer science, business/management information systems, or a closely related field is required. Preferred education and experience beyond the minimum include a master’s degree from an accredited institution; knowledge of higher education data and information systems (particularly Banner); experience with Oracle SQL and PL/SQL; prior experience utilizing Git for source code management.
