State of Montana Clinical Laboratory Technologist (09751) in Helena, Montana

This Clinical Laboratory Specialist position performs testing for infectious agents to support work of the Montana Public Health Laboratory. Testing areas include serology,bacteriology, mycology/parasitology, mycobacteriology and next-generation sequencing. In addition, newborn screening testing is performed to detect metabolic abnormalities in infants. The laboratory is focused on disease detection, surveillance and prevention for the State of Montana. This position also provides technical consultation to public health and clinical partners regarding test methodologies, proper collection and handling of specimens, as well as accurate interpretation and correlation of test results. Major Duties or Responsibilities: Laboratory Testing and Reporting * Performs laboratory testing following standard operating procedures in designated testing areas. * Interprets test data; enters and approves test results in the laboratory information system to generate facility reports. * Reports critical test results immediately to health care providers and reports diseases * of public health significance to public health officials as appropriate. Laboratory Quality Assurance * Participates in laboratory Quality Assurance (QA) activities and follows safety protocols. * Brings any identified issues or concerns to the supervisor’s attention immediately. * Assesses and documents QA processes to detect, control, and prevent the occurrence of errors, and takes corrective action when errors are found. * Analyzes data to look for trending and quality improvement activities. * Validates test systems and reagents and confirms testing system is within control limits prior to accepting test results. Consultative Services and Technical Assistance * Provides consultative services to health care partners including test selection, test interpretation, and proper collection, handling and transport of specimens. * Provides information based on knowledge of seasonal disease trends or history of infectious agents Other Duties as Assigned * Participates in meetings and conference calls as required. * Attends ongoing training and professional development activities. Physical and Environmental Demands:Typical laboratory environment. Work schedule requires limited weekend work and holidays as assigned. Employees participate in a call down list to ensure 24/7/365 coverage for the Public Health Laboratory. Work hours may exceed the normal work week during emergency situations. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Behaviors): Required for the first day of work: * Knowledge of clinical laboratory processes and practices. * Knowledge of guidelines for verification/validation of laboratory tests. * Effective written and verbal communication skills. * Analytical and critical thinking skills including acute attention to detail. * Ability to decide validity of data and interpret test results. * Ability to use reason and logic to identify and solve problems. * Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work activities. * Ability to function effectively under stressful situations. Required Minimum Education and Experience: * Bachelor’s Degree in in a clinical lab science or comparable science discipline. * Oneyear of experience in a CLIA approved clinical laboratory certified for performing high complexity testing. * Current Montana State CLS License or eligibility to obtain a license. * MT(ASCP) or other nationally recognized registry. /Women (and/or) minorities may be under-represented in this position and are encouraged to apply./ /To be considered for any DPHHS Agency position, applicants must complete and submit their application online, as well as upload any required application materials.
