Summary:

Facebook Open Arts builds community through creativity. We present art-related experiences that invite new ways of thinking about ourselves, our communities, and the world at large. Open Arts offerings, available online and in-person, include commissions, workshops and events, design projects, product and partner collaborations, and public programming. Open Arts has worked with more than 900 artists globally in 10 years. The Commissions Lead oversees activities related to Open Arts’ global commissioning program and helps define the future of art at Facebook. This work includes identifying opportunities for artist commissions that expand artistic practice and contribute meaningfully to Facebook spaces, products and experiences; developing enriching digital and in-person encounters with Facebook commissions; extending Facebook’s engagement with the global arts community; elevating a diversity of art; and advancing a generative dialogue between art and technology. The role reports to the Head of Open Arts. The Open Arts Commissions Lead is responsible for the artistic direction and oversight of the global commissions program, ensuring that the strategic vision of Open Arts is implemented in all aspects of commissioning. In addition, this position guides the Commissions team’s collaboration with the Open Arts Design, Experiences, Partnerships, and Strategy & Operations teams and with internal and external partners. The Commissions Lead oversees all commissioning activities and leads, supports, and mentors a globally distributed team of curators (Bay Area, The Americas, EMEA, and APAC).We’re looking for a visionary leader who embraces the power of art to foster empathy and build understanding of timely and universal issues and the potential of technology to catalyze conversations and empower creative communities. This role is an opportunity to build an ambitious artistic program that creates forward-looking experiences in digital and physical space and combines art and technology to connect people and ideas.

Required Skills:

  1. Serves as a key member of Open Arts leadership team, collaborating with program Head and other team leads to advance the Open Arts mission and ensure its integration in all commission-related activities.

  2. Spearheads the creation of an intellectual vision and compelling global strategy for new and existing Open Arts commissions that serve Facebook spaces, products, and experiences.

  3. Work with fellow leads across program areas to deliver curatorial input, content, and support for Open Arts activities including but not limited to public programs, product and design collaborations, and cross functional partnerships.

  4. Oversees digital and physical commissions in a range of scales, media, and complexity.

  5. Develops opportunities to promote and cultivate internal-audience engagement with new and existing Open Arts commissions for both in-office and remote Facebook communities.

  6. Identifies and leverages opportunities to advance the social impact of art and the mutually beneficial relationship between art and technology.

  7. Oversees the identification of and commissioning of all artists in support of Open Arts global strategy and objectives.

  8. Seeks opportunities to advance and contribute to Facebook’s narrative of innovation.

  9. Establishes thought leadership in the intersection of art and tech internally and externally.

  10. Anticipates and develops budgets, workflows, and staffing plans to meet business needs.

  11. Motivates and mentors Commissions team, promoting collaboration, open communication, creative problem-solving, and professional development.

  12. Cultivates relationships with internal and external partners who augment and complement Open Arts programming.

  13. Strengthens, maintains, and builds credibility for the role of Open Arts within the Facebook community and global contemporary art community.

  14. Engages with colleagues throughout Facebook to build internal community and support diversity and inclusion.

  15. Manages individual and team performance by establishing goals, allocating resources and assessing output.

  16. Serves as an advocate for Open Arts internally and externally.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. 15+ years of increasingly responsible experience commissioning art in a museum/arts organization/tech company, with at least seven years in a position of senior management.

  2. Career arc that demonstrates a proven interest in art as a tool for social and forward thinking about the possibilities of art and technology.

  3. Demonstrated engagement with art and artists across digital and physical media, and ease across both practice areas.

  4. Experience cultivating relationships with living artists and a global network of artists and curatorial contacts.

  5. Demonstrated interest and success in programming for audiences including non-traditional and underserved audiences.

  6. Experience leading, inspiring, and guiding the work of curators and artists.

  7. Experience to communicate abstract concepts and advocate for art in a corporate environment.

  8. Experience to synthesize ideas, develop effective plans, and execute projects.

  9. Highly developed strategic planning, entrepreneurial, and problem-solving skills – have an open-minded, inclusive approach and be imaginative, flexible, and willing to experiment.

  10. Active engagement with contemporary art ecosystem and knowledge of relevant news, issues, and events.

  11. Well-developed skills in communication, organization, and management.

  12. Proven track record in people and budget management.

  13. Demonstrated coaching skills and experience to lead a team to accomplish goals in a supportive, collaborative, and empowering manner.

  14. A portfolio of work indicating proven aesthetic sensibilities and demonstrated community-building.

  15. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Fine Arts, Arts Programs, Museum Studies, Curatorial or related field or relevant experience.
