St. Peters Health Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Ambulance, 0.9 FTE in Helena, Montana

JOB SUMMARY: This is primarily a 911 response position on a transporting Advanced Life Support service. In addition to 911, the service provides Inter-facility transports (locally and regionally) and Public Event coverage.

The EMT is responsible for the assessment and pre-hospital management of medical, trauma and environmental emergencies with/without supervision of a Paramedic and under the guidance of on/off-line medical control. Provide patient care, based on individual patient needs, acting within the scope of practice of an Advanced EMT. Responds to both, emergency and non-emergent calls and transfers to provide efficient and immediate care to the ill and injured; and safely transports the patient to an appropriate medical facility. Maintain the ambulances and equipment in a clean and functional condition.

Assists in the Emergency Department (ED) and other nursing departments with skills performed within the levels of training as needed, as available, and as directed for patient care. Such duties include, but are not limited to, vital signs, EKGs, IV insertions, specimen collection, transfers to the floor (when able), cleaning and preparation of rooms, direct observation of patients as requested, and jobs that can assist in patient care and ED flow. Specific department policies and procedures should be followed. Attendance in ED training opportunities are encouraged as they arise in the department.

These expectations and job assignments are subject to change as the needs of the hospital deem appropriate. Patient transfers to the floor or other assignments to additional locations that inhibit prompt ambulance response times should be limited.

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE: 1 Year practical experience of patient care and the use of emergency equipment commonly accepted and employed; such as suction machines, monitor-defibrillators, oxygen delivery systems (installed and portable), backboards, splinting devices, stretchers, and light rescue tools. Knowledge of the territory within the service area, and the traffic ordinances and laws concerning the emergency care and transportation of the sick and injured is preferred. Knowledge of safety measures is required.

EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED preferred.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY: State of Montana EMT License is required. National (NREMT) certification preferred. Current BLS, ACLS, PHTLS (or equivalent) required. EVOC (or equivalent) within the first year is required. Valid State of Montana driver’s license and excellent driving record is required. Must participate in a BOME approved AEMT refresher (or equivalent) and acquire requisite CEU’s.

Aptitudes: Ability to achieve cognitive, organizational, and emotional maturity to deal effectively with multiple tasks, stresses, deadlines, difficult situations and/or customers. Possess the interpersonal communication skills necessary for effective, non-judgmental, empathetic patient care, interpersonal relations, and customer service. Open to feedback and open to a changing environment, which requires flexibility in scheduling and department assignments. Able to read and write in order to complete ambulance reports and other forms as well as perform basic arithmetic in order to calculate medication administration, supply requisitions, mileage, and time performance is required.
