Job Overview

The position is responsible for the development of Native businesses through financial and technical assistance, networking, and statewide and community-based partnerships. This position enhances the ability of the Montana Department of Commerce and Indian Country Economic Development (ICED) to deliver and be responsive to targeted Indian business needs statewide. The position coordinates the resources and expertise necessary to deliver these services. The program coordinates with national, regional and state business development resources that seek to provide technical assistance and capital access to Native American start-up and existing business clients.

Knowledge

The position requires knowledge of:

  • computer and Internet related skills for web-based training and content development

  • local, state, and federal technical and financial assistance organizations

  • Native American culture and perspective on business issues

  • procedures and vocabulary used in community business lending

  • business, state, and federal government operations

  • tribal governments and businesses

  • state and federal grant management

  • public relations methods

Skills

The position requires skills in:

  • effective oral and written communication

  • project and contract monitoring

  • program planning, development, and implementation

  • budgeting and tracking results

  • developing and maintaining relationships with clients, tribal representatives, local and state government and economic development entities

  • coordinating product promotional projects, including trade shows, arranging for product

  • developing and administering educational and training materials and presentations

  • Microsoft Office including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook

  • basics of Social Media platforms, website and database development and management.

  • public speaking

Ability

The position requires the ability to:

  • Independently plan and coordinate work activity and complete work on a timely basis

  • establish effective working relationships with department personnel, state officials, local business and community leaders, tribal members and leaders, and the public.

  • Communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writing and pay close attention to detail

  • Deal effectively with cross-cultural differences, gain the confidence of business, government, and tribal leaders

  • Evaluate statewide business development and training needs

  • Develop and interpret program policies and procedures when applicable

  • Analyze and interpret financial and technical information

  • Conduct research and analysis

  • Negotiate, persuade, and take corrective action, when necessary and appropriate

  • Manage a large workload and respond to non-routine situations

  • Establish and maintain effective and positive working relationships with co-workers, the public, and local, state and federal officials.

*Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience): *

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Marketing, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field with coursework in marketing and business administration.

  • 2-5 years of experience including business development and marketing experience.

  • Other combinations of related education and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

  • Experience working with tribal communities highly preferred.
