State of Montana Network Administrator in Helena, Montana

The Network Administrator provides the overall technical administration, management, and direction of the Systems Administration Program. The incumbent’s responsibilities include desktop administration, network administration, server administration, storage administration, and help desk support. Essential Functions: 35 % Desktop Administration ·Administer Desktop Operating Systems (DOS). ·Responsible for ensuring currently used DOS are regularly maintained and updated with appropriate service packs and patches. ·Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware, software, or other network and system problems. Replace defective components when necessary. ·Assists in inventory of computer hardware. ·Assist in reallocation and surplus of old and unusable computer equipment, following appropriate surplus standards. ·Design, configure, and test computer hardware, networking software, and operating system software.·Configure, monitor, and maintain email applications or virus protection software. 20 % Network Administration ·Ensures the local area network is functioning and resolves problems. ·Recommend changes to improve systems and network configurations. Determine hardware or software requirements related to such changes. ·Gather data pertaining to customer needs and use the information to identify, predict, interpret, and evaluate system and network requirements. ·Perform routine network startup and shutdown procedures. Maintain control records. ·Maintain logs related to network functions, including maintenance and repair records. ·Monitors the network performance to determine whether adjustments need to be made and determine where changes need to be made in the future. 15 % Server Administration ·Implements the server hardware management plan. ·Plans, coordinates, and implements network security measures to protect data, software, and hardware. ·Coordinates server upgrades, service pack applications, and installation of updates and patches. ·Responsible for setup, configuration, and daily maintenance of all servers. ·Replaces and upgrades server hardware and software as necessary. 30 % Help Desk Administration ·Responsible for ensuring the timely and appropriate delivery of various hardware and software. ·Manages Help Desk tickets in a timely manner. Performs follow-up with customers to determine if they received resolution and problems addressed. ·Trains users in various hardware or software use. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: ·Knowledge of various computer software and hardware, including applications and electronic equipment. ·Business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership, and coordination of resources; and ·Determining causes of operating errors and determining next steps. ·Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems. ·Identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions. ·Determine how a system should work and how changes will affect outcome. ·Identify measures or indicators of system performance and actions needed to improve or correct performance; and ·Manage time and meet deadlines. ·Ability to listen, understand and develop working relationships with internal and external customers. ·Combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions. ·Communicate effectively with internal and external customers; and ·Remain solution-oriented with a forward-thinking approach.
