Facebook Optimization Engineer in Helena, Montana

Summary:

We are looking for a hardware Optimization Engineer to work in Area 404 and support the organizations and teams that they support. The Area 404 Lab exists to accelerate hardware development at Facebook. This work spans Foundation Infrastructure hardware, ARVR hardware, and Connectivity hardware (majority focus is on Foundation Infrastructure). We move fast and are looking for a person who is driven to find the fastest, most efficient ways to solve complex problems related to prototyping logistics. This position is a full-time role.

Required Skills:

  1. Work closely with different teams within the Hardware Engineering organization to implement multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) methodology on various projects.

  2. Analysis, Simulation, Experimentation - Use rigorous techniques to understand the problems that need to be solved and characterize the systems components involved in solving them.

  3. Work with members of various engineering teams and external vendors (e.g. mechanical, thermal, networking, data center infrastructure etc.) to develop and add new simulation models.

  4. First Principles Thinking - Identify and formulate simple and only sufficiently representative models using first order effects to most efficiently answer questions.

  5. Run computationally intensive simulations on high performance computing (HPC) platforms.

  6. Effectively communicate results and design recommendations to diverse audiences.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or mathematics.

  2. A proven applied or academic research track record in applying multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) methodology to a large complex engineering system.

  3. Demonstrated experience of fundamentals across disciplines (e.g. optimization, FE modeling, structures, thermal/fluids, electrical, statistical analysis, uncertainty quantification, machine learning).

  4. Solid understanding of basic optimization algorithms and application to engineering problems.

  5. Experience with optimization and machine learning tools applied in engineering (e.g. Python SciPy Optimize, Scikit-Learn, OpenMDAO, MATLAB Optimization toolbox).

  6. Experience working with core FE simulation tools (e.g. Ansys, Fluent, Icepack, Flotherm etc.).

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. A PhD or Master’s in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Mathematics.

  2. 5+ years of industrial or academic experience.

  3. Experience solving large-scale multidisciplinary optimization problems.

  4. Advanced proficiency in Python.
