State of Montana Research & Information Services Intern in Helena, Montana

About this Position The Research and Information Services (RIS) Bureau within the Montana Department of Commerce partners with people, agencies, and organizations throughout the state, nation, and globe to promote economic opportunity and enhance our understanding of the people and economy of the State of Montana. RIS is comprised of three components: The Census and Economic Information Center, the Tourism Research Program, and the Industry Development Program. You can learn more about ushere. The RIS Student Intern will gain real world experience in compiling and analyzing data, building interactive data visualizations, and researching industry sectors to identify opportunities for economic growth. Additional responsibilities may include responding to inquiries, participating in meetings with both internal and external stakeholders, website design and development, and assisting with agency-specific research projects. Education and Experience: * Current Associates or currently pursuing a Bachelor or Master’s in Business or Business Administration, Business Intelligence, Community Development, Data Science, Economics, Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Mathematics, Market Analytics or Research, Public Administration, or Statistics * Alternate combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis Competencies: /Knowledge of:/ * MS Office Suite (State currently using Microsoft 365) * Data management, reporting, and visualization * Statistical analysis * Business intelligence tool (Tableau, Power BI, DOMO, etc.) experience is a bonus /Ability to:/ * Communication Skill: Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication. Ability to work with several different people both in the office and remotely * Project management skills: ability to work independently, demonstrated success in taking initiative, organizing steps associated with complex projects and successfully completing those steps in a timely manner * Applied research skills: ability to read and understand economic development publications such as newsletters, articles, and whitepapers to infer opportunities for economic development.
