VMware Staff Engineer 2 - VMware Government Services (SaaS / Cloud Security) - Opportunity for Working Remotely in Helena, Montana

Elevator Pitch

The Security Compliance and Privacy Engineering team (SCOPE) is building a platform for the purpose of running mission critical infrastructure, often of national significance, to be secure, compliant, scalable, performant, observable, and efficient. Several of these systems power mission critical workloads of national importance and often of adverse interest to other nation state actors.

The SCOPE team is seeking a hands-on technical anchor who can deliver and lead others to deliver. You will design, architect, and build infrastructure which all VMWare products will adopt in our common platform. Additionally, you will consult and enable teams onboarding on our common platform. This role is unique in its being at the cross-section of mission critical impact, modern tech stack, security, stringent compliance frameworks and cross-BU VMWare wide impact and visibility.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

In the first 30 days you will get to know the team and the tech stack. Within the first 90 days you will lead initiatives on deployment and observability by participating in root-cause-analysis and large-scale system design. After having a foundational understanding of the tech stacks in use and the operational aspects of the systems the SCOPE team supports, you will begin to design and build software oriented towards system or network automation that alleviates manual toil or increases the resiliency of these systems.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

This role requires you to be capable of leading from the front as an individual contributor through guiding and enabling others in the team to contribute to system design for robust reliability KPIs; 24x7x365. You will work on facilitating cross-program communication and collaboration to help the SCOPE organization rally around shared security, compliance, and availability goals with its BU partners.

What is leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

The hiring manager for this role is Chris Rimondi, Director of Compliance Engineering, overseeing the SCOPE SRE team. A key part of Chris’s management philosophy is sharing business context with engineers then providing them with autonomy they need to solve difficult problems. He recently joined VMware to add his SRE industry expertise to this fast-growing group. Prior to this role, Chris was Vice President of Engineering at Cofense and Director of Site Reliability Engineering at FireEye, two premier cybersecurity companies.
