The Montana Department of Revenue administers almost 40 state taxes, property appraisals,alcoholic beverage laws, cannabis lawsand unclaimed property for the state of Montana. The Business and Income Taxes Division (BIT) manages a variety of Montana tax types that include business, individual, and natural resources.BIT is comprised offive bureaus including Analytics and Planning, Income and Withholding Taxes, Audits and Pass-Through, Natural Resource and Corporate, and Business Taxes and Fees. BIT staff performaudits, verify compliance with Montana laws for all taxes administered by the division, and issue appraisals and assessments of centrally assessed property. In addition to employee benefits, there are a wide range of advancement opportunities throughout the Department of Revenue. _DUTIES_ Job Overview: This position resides in theBusiness & Income Taxes DivisionofDepartment of Revenue. The Business and Income Tax Division ensures secure handling and processing of taxpayer information and data. Duties include conducting technical level examinations on assigned tax returns that involve research, verifying data, adjusting returns, providing communications to taxpayers and their representatives, and participating in the appeal process. Tax examiner I’s assist with development of audit programs and procedures, draft summary reports of audit findings, and testify as an expert witness. They also assist other tax examiners in their responsibilities and provide a range of support services to taxpayers and other department programs and employees.
