The Food Distribution Commodity Warehouse handles approximately 15 million pounds of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) purchased commodities annually. The Warehouse Manager must plan, organize, and manage the tasks of warehouse staff to ensure that commodity food is distributed in a manner consistent with program requirements and recipient agency needs.The supervisor has the responsibility to ensure that commodity foods are received, stored, and shipped according to federal regulations, best practices, and safety guidelines. Duties are performed independently without direct supervision. The Warehouse manager directly supervises two warehouse workers and three tractor-trailer drivers.

Warehouse Management

  • Prioritizes, schedules, and coordinates logistics of all outgoing loads of USDA commodity foods for distribution to recipient agencies.

  • Reviews all picked loads for accuracy. Ensures loads maximize efficiency and are within weight and drive time regulations.

  • Schedules all incoming USDA deliveries. Maintains all receiving documents.Ensures that all items are properly stored in an orderly manner and ensures efficient space utilization.

  • Determines storage needs and manage contracts with offsite contractors.

  • Ensures all dry, canned, refrigerated, and frozen food stock is stored according to USDA guidelines. Develops procedures for stock rotation.

  • Coordinates with Office of Public Instruction (OPI) staff and contractors for the receipt, storage, loading and transport of school foods. Maintains inventory and distribution records.

  • Tracks, reviews and reconciles inventory data and performs data entry into the warehouse inventory management system.

  • Schedules and maintains records of all service and repair cost records of vehicles and equipment. Makes recommendations for equipment replacement or purchase.


  • Supervises the activities of all 5 warehouse staff to optimize employee workflow. Assign and coordinate work assignments.

  • Ensures compliance with personnel rules, regulations, and policies.

  • Conducts performance appraisals, interviewing, and constructive discipline.

  • Communicate and collaborate with other team members.

  • Constantly works to improve processes. Makes suggestions for productivity improvements.

Warehouse safety, security, and maintenance

  • Establishes, follows and enforces safety standards and procedures in compliance with a healthy work environment and legal requirements. Provides training according to state and federal standards. Maintains records of safety training and certifications.

  • Safeguards warehouse operations and contents by establishing and monitoring security procedures and protocols.

Physical and Environmental Demands*: *Work is performed in a typical warehouse environment with exposure to loud noise, dust and fumes. Repetitious, lifting of up to 40 pounds, twisting, squatting, pushing, pulling, climbing, with limited carrying of loads up to 65 pounds will be required. Work includes freezer compartment where the temperature is -4 degrees. Potential 24/7 call-out for emergency alarm response.

Required for thefirst day of work:

  • Knowledge of warehouse management principles and procedures, including stock rotation, storage, safety, transportation, resource allocation, and inventory requirements.

  • Knowledge of warehousing operations from receiving through final destination of goods, cost and effective management of resources.

  • Skill in operating a forklift and pallet jack.

  • Excellent organization, communication and time management skills.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, foster collaboration and provide leadership to staff.

  • Ability to analyze complex situations, gather information, make decisions and implement solutions.

  • Ability to perform basic math calculations such as addition, subtraction, and multiplication.Ability to operate a personal computer and general office equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, including using spreadsheets, word processing, database, email and other computer programs, including inventory management system.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree, or two years of post-secondary education in business administration, management, human services, or related fields.

  • Four years of job-related warehouse management, logistics, or over the road truck dispatching experience required.

  • Two years supervisory experience.

  • Forklift certification or CDL Class A preferred.

  • Other combinations of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
