Position Title: Assistant Store Manager

Status: Hourly, full-time

SUPERVISES: Oversee the activities of staff, volunteers, and/or community service personnel.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • High School degree or equivalent

  • Three years of demonstrated experience in a retail environment

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrated knowledge of cash controls and cashier procedures

  • Experience reading computer spreadsheets and working with email, internet skills, Excel, Word, and other computer programs

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts and margins

  • Have a basic working knowledge of office machines

  • Retail and supervisory experience preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Provide leadership and direction to assigned associates. Maintain daily production schedules and ensure safety, quality and production requirements are met. Track and coordinate department manpower, production, and budget. Analyze problems and implement countermeasures to improve department performance. Coordinate with other Assistant Managers and departments.

  • Must complete and adhere to Protecting the Mission requirements and guidelines, including the ability to pass a TSA background check

  • A valid, in-state license and ability to pass The Salvation Army’s in-house driving test and MVR check

  • If employee owns his/her own vehicle, must possess current auto insurance for instances in which a personal vehicle is used on TSA time and/or business. Please note that TSA adheres to the federal standards regarding mileage reimbursement.

SCOPE OF POSITION:

The Assistant Manager will work in coordination with the Store Manager in the responsibilities of meeting daily goals, motivation and development of store staff, merchandise organization, production, customer service, and sales while maintaining a clean organized retail setting. When the Store Manager is not on site, the Assistant Manager will be responsible for all daily activities in the store. Will be required to cross train in other Thrift Store departments and provide supervisory coverage in those areas as needed to include but not limited to operating a cash register, stock clothing racks, tag sales floor items, etc.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

In coordination with and as designated by the Store Manager, oversee:

  • Personnel

  • Plan and prepare work schedules

  • Train new employees and volunteers

  • Demonstrate the highest standards of courtesy with employees, customers, and donors. They will exemplify the highest standards of integrity in leadership and loyalty to the job, supervisor, and to the Corps of The Salvation Army.

  • Be involved in motivating, developing, and directing people as they work, identifying the best people for the job. They will encourage and build mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members, actively interacting with employees. Will provide specific written input for annual evaluations of employees and evaluation of volunteers as needed from referring agencies.

  • The Assistant Manager will facilitate regularly scheduled staff meetings to communicate the goals of the organization and recommendations for improving operations. The Assistant Manager will be given an opportunity for input with ideas and concerns that they have regarding the operations.

  • The Assistant Manager shall ensure that all staff and volunteers will be thoroughly orientated in safety and accident policy and procedures as outlined in The Salvation Army Employee Handbook.

  • The Assistant Manager must be willing and able to handle all duties as noted under the Store Associate job descriptions when called upon to do so. The Assistant Manager will have other specific duties as assigned by the Manager. These may include:

  • Coordination of Advertising and Promotions

  • Interviewing and Hiring

  • Building customer loyalty - Actively interact with customers

General Responsibilities

  • The Assistant Manager must be cross-trained in all store positions and able to cover open shifts to ensure coverage when needed. The Assistant Manager may also assist in any given position during busy periods (ex. cashiering, stocking, etc.)

  • The Assistant Manager, along with the Store Manager, will be responsible for the opening and closing procedures for the store.

  • The Assistant Manager will delegate the arrangement for seasonal shopping and merchandise availability.

  • The Assistant Manager will work with each supervisor to achieve their department goals.

  • In the absence of the Store Manager, the Assistant Manager will assume all the responsibilities of the Manager.

  • Must be available to attend all regularly scheduled and mandatory staff meetings regardless of whether they are outside a scheduled shift or standard work day.

Customer/Community Relations

  • The Assistant Manager is responsible to ensure that all employees positively acknowledge and treat all customers and the public in a courteous manner.

  • Customer complaints will be handled in a professional manner by all staff. The Assistant Manager should personally handle complaints and immediately notify the Store Manager of the facts surrounding the complaint and the disposition thereof.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis

  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time on a hard floor

  • Ability to continuously grasp, push, pull objects and reach overhead

  • Ability to repetitively lift 35 lbs.

  • Ability to produce written information such as receipts

  • Ability to understand written information including maps

THE ASSITANT STORE MANAGER DRESS CODE IS AS FOLLOWS:

Be neatly groomed with clean, pressed clothing. Shoes must be appropriate business casual. Name badge or lanyard with title required. These guidelines are subject to change at any time. No distracting or inappropriate jewelry, clothing accessories or hair accessories.

Health Insurance: Low bi-weekly premiums for employee-only coverage, Kaiser HMO for those residing in a Kaiser service area, Anthem EPO/PPO is available for those residing outside a Kaiser service area. Voluntary +1 and +family coverage at additional cost. Delta Dental DHMO and DPPO dental insurance are offered.

Life and Voluntary Options. An employer-paid life insurance policy covers employees. Voluntary supplemental life, short-term and long-term disability plans are available.

Retirement Plans: Employer-funded Money Purchase Pension Plan (Defined Contribution Plan) 50% vested at five years eligible service time. Plus, an employee-funded voluntary 403(b) option.

Parental Leave: The benefit is 40 hours of Paid Leave for qualifying events.

Sick Leave: 12 days of Sick Leave annually accruing from day one, eligible for use after three months’ service time.

Paid Vacation:

  • Two weeks annually, accruing from day one, for non-exempt positions.

  • Four weeks annually, accruing from day one, for exempt positions.

  • Accrued vacation is eligible for use after six months’ service time.

Paid Holidays: 13 designated holidays + 1 floating holiday per year
