Kalispell Regional Healthcare Supervisor, Medical Social Worker in Kalispell, Montana


This position provides direct leadership, expertise, and serves as a Social Work resource. Provides coaching and development opportunities for assigned staff. Works in conjunction with leadership to advance the visibility of Social Work and the delivery of care in a coordinated, supportive way. This is a working supervisor position that allows the individual to be an active member of the interdisciplinary team to support the hospitalized patient in an effort to optimize quality outcomes, patient satisfaction and utilization of services.


  • Under the direction of assigned leadership, provides professional leadership and daily oversight of the inpatient social worker team for assigned areas(s).

  • Assists leadership with the recruitment, hiring process, and conducts orientation and onboarding of new social worker staff.

  • In collaboration with leadership, provides constructive feedback on employee performance, and prepares and delivers employee evaluations.

  • Exhibits team member etiquette, offers assistance, discusses problems/issues, and coaches and mentors staff with compassion and patience. Contributes positive ideas which enhance work flow and/or team function. Exhibits flexibility and organization while functioning calmly and efficiently in a changing environment.

  • Responsible for the day to day operations, training, and development of assigned area(s). Schedules assigned staff work flow to ensure tasks are completed in a timely manner.

  • Performs in a leadership capacity in the assigned leadership’s absence.

  • Is vigilant of area specific and organizational wide budget constraints as demonstrated by appropriate utilization of all resources. These include, but may not be limited to: staffing and productivity standards, overtime, low census, supplies and timeliness of work product.

  • Maintains competence as a Medical Social Worker and identifies support and social needs of hospitalized patients in assigned area(s). Supports patients and families in making difficult decisions related to hospital stay and discharge.

  • Supports patients, families, and front-line caregivers throughout the acute hospitalization and assists with overcoming social barriers of the healthcare system.

  • Exhibits attentiveness of risk for readmission and works with the interdisciplinary team across the healthcare continuum to address social determinants of health that may impact the discharge planning process. Keeps the patient and identified support person(s) engaged in all aspects of planning. Explores and discusses barriers with appropriate stakeholders and seeks input from the multidisciplinary team, with continued awareness on the discharge plan.

  • Remains mindful that successful discharge plans consider both social and clinical aspects of discharge needs. Partners with appropriate stakeholders across the healthcare continuum to identify social barriers to discharge. Acts as an expert regarding community resources, healthcare needs impacting discharge plan and social barriers to discharge. Remains mindful of registration status and payer requirements as they relate to discharge options in order to fully support patients and families in making informed healthcare decisions.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work required. Masters degree in Social Work preferred.

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a Medical Social Worker required.

  • Minimum of one (1) year leadership experience required.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy.

  • Possess and maintain computer skills to include working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn other software as needed.

  • Excellent organizational skills, detail-oriented, a self-starter, possess critical thinking skills and be able to set priorities and function as part of a team as well as independently.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with various audiences.
