At DNRC we are passionate about ensuring that Montana’s land and water resources remain a benefit today and for future generations. We are actively seeking an IT Computer System Specialist who values the vast resources in our treasure state as much as we do. Yes, we fight fires across Montana and provide volunteer fire departments with resources, but are you aware that our agency also owns 5.2 million acres of state land that generates revenue for K-12 schools? Last fiscal year our Trust Lands Division distributed over forty-three million dollars. $43 million. That's no chump change. Or how about, that we are a significant resource to assist small communities through grant funding with restoration of their natural resources. Small communities' matter in Montana. We are also responsible for managing all the water rights throughout the state.

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) provides quality, effective information technology solutions to enable the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) to fulfill its mission "to ensure Montana's land and water resources provide benefits for present and future generations." The OIT team provides business client support, application development, data and systems management, and GIS development services, as well as coordinating department operations with the State Information Technology Services Division and other State agencies. This position will focus on business client support.


If you are the successful candidate for this position you will provide technical assistance for IT related systems, hardware, and software for all employees of the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation. This position is critical in facilitating an innovative, stable, accurate, and efficient technology environment for all of DNRC and its employees.

You will manage assigned IT systems utilized by DNRC employees or OIT personnel including but not limited to applications, software, computer systems, mobile devices, servers, security tools and features, and other IT systems. This work can include imaging new computers, scheduling and installing new computer software or hardware, and modifying and patching current systems. DNRC currently uses Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager to accomplish most of these tasks so knowledge with this tool is a plus but not required. You may be called upon to install, configure, backup, and maintain assigned server environments located in DNRC offices throughout the state.

Additionally, this position along with the entire OIT team is responsible for ensuring all assigned IT systems comply with State and DNRC system, security, and network standards.

You will be responsible for providing basic and advanced technical assistance to all DNRC employees in support of software, hardware, system access, and other technology-based systems and tools used by the agency's employees. You may need to work with the OIT team, the State Information Technology Services Division (SITSD), other state agencies, or individually to troubleshoot reported software applications or hardware problems by identifying the issue, conducting research, working with vendors or other state entities, identifying and recommending possible solutions, and completing or assisting in the implementation of the chosen solution. Utilizing tools such as Microsoft Active Directory, you will assist with the setup of new users and manage user access to IT systems along with email and security groups for DNRC employees.

Having a knowledgeable workforce is imperative, especially when it comes to technology. Thus, you will be asked to develop training materials and conduct formal and informal technical and computer training for DNRC employees. You will also be responsible for creating, reviewing, updating, and following procedures and guidelines for IT related tasks. As this is a tier 2 position working within a team, you may be asked to provide technical assistance to other technical personnel and will assume the role of mentoring and guiding tier 1 computer support staff to facilitate dynamic computer systems, applications, or other IT systems for end users.

Security in today’s technology driven world is increasingly important. The position will help keep the IT systems utilized by DNRC as secure as possible by installing, monitoring, and managing state designated security-based software on computer, server, and mobile based systems. You will be asked to respond to, research, and mitigate security warnings or threats to computer or server-based systems, escalating them when needed.

The knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, business administration with a minor in computer science or information systems, or closely related field and four years of progressively responsible experience in the information technology support field.  The four years of experience can come from computer systems administration or information technology support experience and should including hardware deployment, software installation, configuration, and management in a client services support environment.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of information processes and network technologies, including the various hardware platforms, software applications (both server and workstation), hardware and software configurations, peripherals, and troubleshooting and diagnostics tools and techniques.

  • Extensive knowledge of the following software and tools: Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft Windows operating systems, Microsoft Server operating system, Microsoft O365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, etc.), and security software and tools.

  • Knowledge in Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager, Intune, PowerShell, and Microsoft Group Policy is a plus.

  • Knowledge of the following hardware: Computers, servers, printers, mobile devices, wireless access points, and other department-supported hardware as implemented.


  • Ability to provide excellent customer service and maintain positive working relationships with staff throughout the agency.

  • Ability to effectively communicate complex concepts in one-on-one and teaching situations to technical and non-technical people.

  • Ability to successfully write processes, procedures, and instructions for technical and non-technical people.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects under tight timelines while maintaining consistently high levels of product quality.

  • Ability to work in a team environment to achieve the agency’s mission and objectives.

  • Ability to assess and solve complex problems; devise methodologies and solutions; perform analyses; relate relevant information about hardware and software operation, data management and analysis in management applications and interactions; and interpret results.

  • Requires a high degree of analytical ability combined with a thorough knowledge of the field of information technology.
