Position Overview

The Sheriff's Office is expanding its workforce and adding new Deputy Sheriff positions.

The Sheriff's Office performs law enforcement and crime prevention work including preserving the peace, patrolling assigned areas, serving warrants and making arrests, and conducting investigations. The mission of the Sheriff's Office is to serve and protect persons and property in the County of Madison, State of Montana. POST Certification is required.

Job Responsibilities

The Deputy Sheriff is responsible for performing law enforcement and crime prevention work including patrolling of assigned areas, preserving the peace, serving warrants and making arrests, conduct criminal investigations and providing inmate security at a Sheriff’s detention facility. This includes assignments to civil, detention, investigations, and court security; and performing related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

The demands and conditions described here are representative of those the employee must meet to perform the essential functions of the job.

Frequent standing, sitting, bending, stooping, twisting of waist, side-to-side turning of neck and lifting of heavy objects.

Operate motor vehicles in a safe manner in both normal and emergency conditions.

Ability to conduct all the duties of this position with little or no supervision.

Fine finger dexterity to operate keyboards, and writing materials.

Must give verbal commands in a loud, clear, understandable voice, have excellent vision and hearing.

Ability to properly use and function with a variety of communications devices.

Ability to physically pursue and physically control and/or subdue a person.

Ability to physically protect themselves and others from a variety of dangers.

Work outside in varying weather conditions.

Competently responds to and locates calls for service and emergencies.

Work in rough and uneven terrain.

Ability to be on-call 24 hours a day/7 days a week.

Exposure to criminals, physical danger and other hazards involving people and the environment.

Education Requirements

POST CERTIFICATION IS REQUIRED. This job requires education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or a GED certificate.

The job requires a valid Montana driver’s license, or eligibility to gain one, and a good driving record.
