Position Overview

CLASS A CDL is required.

Work Unit Overview: The Solid Waste Staff is supervised by the Solid Waste Foreman and provides a variety of Solid Waste services across Madison County.

Job Summary: This includes sorting solid waste, operating heavy equipment and compactors, bailing cardboard and plastic, assisting the public when disposing of solid waste and maintaining a clean and orderly container site and landfill. Performs regular maintenance of truck, trailer, containers, and container site areas. Includes: loading, hauling, dumping and replacement of containers to and from landfills and container sites due to refuse spillage, litter, and overflow. The performance of any other related work as required by Madison County. Keeping records of trips made and scheduled maintenance performed on all equipment. Any other routine task associated with the Solid Waste and Junk Vehicle Departments. Work hours are 8:00a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with lunch break at 12:00p.m. to 1:00p.m. A morning and afternoon break of 15 minutes each may also be taken. Any changes to duties or schedule of work must be approved by supervisor. Daily log sheets of activity and time sheets to be turned in every two weeks.

Job Responsibilities

• Must operate a backhoe, loader, forklift compactor and cardboard/ plastic bailer. • Must drive to landfill, monitor and identify, the solid waste, and determine the suitability of disposal for all loads of Class III Material. • Must bale cardboard and plastics and assist drivers in loading the trucks for delivery. • Must pick up litter and windblown waste at landfills and container sites to maintain a clean and safe work area. • Must prepare landfill for periodic burns in compliance with air quality regulations. • Must occasionally assist the public with unloading trash. • Must inspect and identify solid waste, and sort Class II and Class III waste. • Must clean and service all equipment and maintain in good working condition. • Must assist in repair of all fences and outbuildings. • Operates specialized trucks and equipment to haul solid waste & junk vehicles. • Must be able to weld and fabricate dumpster and facilities as needed.

  • Clarity of speech and hearing that permits employee to communicate with supervisors, employees, and the general public.

  • Sufficient vision to classify solid waste and to operate equipment as required.

  • Must have good organization and communication skills.

  • Must be self-motivated and cooperative, have the ability and willingness to meet the public in a helpful manner, have a good attitude and be able to perform under minimum supervision.

  • Must have the ability to tactfully handle complaints from the public.

  • Must have a valid Montana CDL.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to stand, twist, stoop, reach, push, pull, move & lift up to 50lbs.occasionally & up to 100-200lbs on a brief & random basis. • Must be able to frequently walk, sit, talk and hear. • Must perform work in all types of weather and in the dust, dirt & debris. • Must be physically fit and able to complete all the essential functions of the position.

Education Requirements

High School Diploma or G. E. D. equivalent Current commercial license (CDL) including the following classifications, is required: 1. Combination Vehicle Class A2 2. Air brake endorsement Applicant must be able to pass physical examination along with drug and alcohol screening as required by Madison County. The job requires freedom from illegal use of drugs and freedom from use and effects of drugs and alcohol in the workplace. Must pass a background check.
