Position Overview

Job Summary: The Weed Sprayer is responsible for weed control through the proper application of pesticides herbicides in accordance with Federal, state and county laws. Duties include noxious weed identification, safely handling and properly mixing chemicals, spraying and performing light maintenance and calibration of weed spraying equipment. Ability to drive a ¾ ton or larger truck with a 300 gallon tank while towing a trailer.

Job Responsibilities

• Must be 18 years of age and hold a valid driver's license. • Must have knowledge and understanding of reading maps. • Must be able to compile and submit daily reports, • Must be able to properly identify noxious weeds from rosette to adult stage. • Mix and apply herbicides in accordance with work orders. Review chemical labels & Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for each product before application. • Perform spraying operations using broadjet and hand-line systems according to department policies and procedures and applicable laws. • Operate vehicles and application delivery systems including a spray truck, 4 wheelers, ATV/UTVs, four wheel drives, one ton trucks, and other weed control equipment. Adhere to all department safety standards including observing weather conditions, traffic, water, and animals that may affect spraying operations. • Must assist with regular maintenance and some repair on vehicles and equipment. • Properly rinsate materials and dispose of empty containers and maintain the appearance and cleanliness of the unit you are assigned to.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - • This job requires knowledge of basic math in order to make computations; knowledge of the weeds and crops grown in Montana and the appropriate herbicides that mange undesired vegetation. • Knowledge of 2 and 4 wheel drive vehicles used for delivery of chemicals. • Knowledge of small engines and how to operate and maintain them. • This job requires the ability to mix the correct herbicide and determine proper conditions for application of the herbicides; to monitor and maintain safety protocols; to work and communicate effectively in person and via phone or two-way radio; to read, understand, and follow instructions and SDS labels; and to read and understand maps. • This job also requires the ability to recognize and identify noxious weeds.

Physical Requirements

• Must be physically able to work four 10 hour days and at times perform strenuous duties. • Must be able to walk several miles per day, including: adverse terrain, pulling or carrying hose, carrying a backpack sprayer. • Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Infrequently, the employee must lift and/or move over 50 pounds. • Frequently works near moving or mechanical parts with fumes or airborne particles in outdoor conditions. The employee occasionally works in cold and extremely hot conditions. • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Education Requirements

This job requires education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or GED The job requires freedom from illegal use of drugs and freedom from use and effects of drugs and alcohol in the workplace. Persons who have been found guilty by a court of law of abusing, neglecting or mistreating individuals in a health care setting are ineligible for employment in this position. Must pass a background check.
