Job Overview: Recreation Therapy Aides (RTA) plan, organize, and implement structured therapeutic activities that meet the diverse preferences and interests of the patients. Therapeutic activities are facilitated by RTA staff on unit as well as off unit in designated treatment areas to include campus-wide events, large and small group activities, and assigned individualized sessions. Therapeutic Activities 60% * Researches and plans specific lifestyle and social recreational activities that meet targeted functional outcomes. The activities will be diverse and include weekly patient participation in a program that includes fitness, health and wellness, arts and crafts, hobby, leisure and recreation skill development, self-care, and socialization. * Plans, leads, and instructs patients in unit and campus-based group activities as well as community reintegration activities. Unit activities include monthly special events that meet treatment identified outcomes and encourage positive community and social interaction. * Functions as a role model to patients by demonstrating and participating in group skill development and activity focus to encourage acquisition of positive life skills. * Develops therapeutic activity protocols that include short term goals and focus on group inclusion. * Provides individual sessions to patients as determined by Recreation Therapist Assessment to meet treatment recommendations of rehabilitative therapy services. * Performs risk assessments on programming and resources to ensure safety of client at all times. * Implements activity adaptations and modifications to promote inclusion of patients regardless of diagnosis or disability. * Orders and stocks supplies required for scheduled activities. * Encourages patient attendance in assigned rehabilitation groups and activities by escorting them to the activities and groups. * Ensures facilities, working areas, and equipment are clean, safe, and maintained per infection control, health, fire and safety codes. 1. Consultation on Treatment 30% * Observes patient response to therapeutic activities and reports behavioral observations verbally to the Recreation Therapist and treatment team. * Documents the implementation and effects of therapeutic activities per policy and procedures. * Meets weekly with unit-based Recreation Therapist to discuss client progress in activities. * Maintains attendance records of patient participation accurately and in a timely manner. * Ensures patient care adheres to Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP) orders and safety restrictions. * Provides treatment and care based upon the culture of the patient as well as age, characteristics, and limitations of disabling conditions. 1. Professional Development 5% * Participates in professional development and trainings to meet Continuing Education requirements and to ensure activities provide current trends. * Assists in development of Department guidelines, policies, and procedures. * Attends departmental, unit, and team meetings as assigned. * Complies with Department, Division, and Hospital policy and direction as well as applicable state statutes. 1. Other Duties as Assigned 5% * Assists with tasks and assignments provided by senior and executive leadership. * Participates in team activities as directed. * Provides input and feedback to Hospital Administrator / Chief Operations Officer as directed. * Performs other duties as directed. *Physical and Environmental Demands: This position is required to move between work areas throughout the day as well as part of the offered activities to patients. Must be able to safely demonstrate and facilitate all types of leisure activities throughout the day and lift up to twenty pounds. Work will be performed primarily indoors but will transition throughout the day between buildings. Additional activities will occur outdoors in varied weather conditions. Position may be required to assist in patient crisis interventions to include patient holds and restraints due to imminent safety risk of patient and/or others. Work hours could change occasionally due to special activities or events. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: (required for first day of work) * Knowledge of mental health diagnoses as well as developmental, intellectual, and physical disabilities. * Knowledge and experience planning and facilitating a variety of social and recreational activities to include fitness, arts and crafts, sports, social leisure, recreation, hobbies, and music. * Knowledge of application and use of a variety of recreation and fitness equipment. * Knowledge and experience upholding professional boundaries. * Skill using motivational techniques to encourage patient involvement in treatment. * Effective verbal and written communication skills. * Active listening and support skills. * Ability to make observations and report and record them accurately. * Ability to provide program adaptations and modifications to ensure patient inclusion. * Ability to receive constructive feedback and implement suggested work performance. * Ability to deal with sensitive and confidential information according to HIPPA policy and procedure. * Ability to operate a personal computer and general office equipment as necessary to complete the essential functions including using spreadsheet, word processing, data base, e-mail, internet, and other computer programs. _Special Note:_ *Please answer the following three supplemental questions and attach your answers in Word or PDF format to your completed application online. _Applications received without answers will not be considered_. Question 1: The RTA position offers 20 or more group contacts a week. You have been assigned to teach a Crafts group twice a week. Identify 5 craft activities that you would facilitate and include how you would research information/resources for these 5 crafts. Question 2: Identify a recreational activity that you will provide a group of 12 clients. Outline how you will facilitate the activity including setting, equipment and how you will structure the activity so that all levels may participate. Also include how you will ensure safety and maximize client engagement despite varying levels of client ability. Question 3: You have been assigned to provide individual treatment to a client. The client is currently in seclusion and has had recent incidents of physical and verbal aggression. Describe how you would begin meeting with the client as well as ideas to engage them in positive activity and social interactions.
